A collaborative Opera combining the talents of Opera Classica Europa of Germany with Mercury Opera of Canada. Media Release (01/28/2018) Drumheller, AB - Carmen in the Badlands becomes a reality on August 4th, 2018 when Opera makes its debut at the Badlands Amphitheatre in Drumheller, Alberta. Opera Classica Europa of Germany teams up with Mercury Opera of Canada, to perform one of the world's most famous operas on the iconic Badlands stage.

Set in Seville during the 1800s, Carmen tells the tragic story of a temptress gypsy and the soldier she convinces to let her escape prison. Created by French composer Georges Bizet, Carmen is one of the most beloved and often produced operas in the world. With its exotic Spanish setting and sordid love triangle, Carmen introduced a style of realism into opera that changed live theatre forever, and remains just as potent and relevant today as it did the day it was first performed in Paris in 1875.

Opera Classica Europa, the largest independent opera company in Europe is widely known for turning castles into open air theatres. Opera luminaries on their 2018 roster include John Osborn (Met, La Scala), and Marc Heller (Met, Bolshoi). Carmen begins with an eight-city and four-country tour across Europe before its North American debut, and its cast will be comprised of established and rising stars on the International operatic stage.

As published on All Events Edmonton, "Ever since its New York City inception in 1999, Mercury Opera’s Darcia Parada has gleefully messed with the public’s perception of what opera entails. Blowing away all the pretentious cobwebs of the artform by presenting accessible operatic experiences, often to standing room only audiences in unorthodox venues: underground commuter rail platforms, tents, paddle riverboats, circus sideshows, back alleys and fire escapes… Ottawa’s Rideau Canal.”

“That trend continues with the August 4, 2018 performance of Carmen on the great outdoor stage of the Badlands Amphitheatre in Drumheller,” says Vance Neudorf, Executive Director of the Badlands Amphitheatre.

Adds “Neudorf, “The Badlands Amphitheatre with its natural acoustics and grand, built-in set nestled in the Badlands bowl of sedimentary rock and arid landscape, lends itself perfectly to multiple operatic plots, especially, Carmen.”

“Our long-term goal is to make Opera in the Badlands an annual event for those who love opera played out on an epic outdoor scale. This is a place of beauty and inspiration; it is a natural fit for an international opera production.” Tickets for the August 4th presentation of Carmen in the Badlands are now on sale at Badlands Amp and over the phone at 403-823-2001.
