Media Release: B.C. Greens respond to Pattullo Bridge announcement

British Columbia

Jonina Campbell, Deputy Leader, and Adam Olsen, spokesperson for transportation, responded to the province’s announcement that it is funding the $1.377 billion replacement of the Pattullo Bridge.

WireService.ca Media Release (02/16/2018) Victoria, BC - “This is a necessary and overdue upgrade, but this raises questions about the government’s broader plans for transportation funding,” said Campbell.

“The Pattullo is a vital link in the region’s major road network, and I am particularly glad to see that the project will include space for cyclists and pedestrians. The removal of tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ear’s bridges put $4.2 billion onto taxpayer-supported debt. There are many vital elements of the Mayor’s 10-year Plan that await funding - in particular the Broadway Subway extension and the Surrey LRT. It is important to meet our commitment to fund these projects, especially as the population of the Lower Mainland continues to rapidly expand.”

Adam Olsen added, “Fundamentally, we need a comprehensive approach to transportation that reduces emissions and helps people get from A to B as efficiently and affordably as possible. The Independent Commission on Mobility Pricing will release its findings on mobility pricing this spring. Mobility pricing is used all over the world to reduce emissions and congestion. We look forward to hearing the results of the mobility pricing report and to working with the government to determine how we can ensure our transit system is affordable, accessible and efficient.”
