Press Release: Hand To Hand Community Helps Choices Youth Shelter Freshen Up the New Year

Bookmark and Share

On January 4, 2012 Hand To Hand Community Services FDN donated a year's supply of HE laundry detergent & vinegar, for green cleaning, to CHOICES Youth Shelter in Orangeville ON. Press Release - Jan 7, 2012 - CHOICES worker Amanda was most appreciative of the gift, exclaiming that they were almost out of detergent when Hand To Hand showed up with the donation. Choices Youth Shelter does around 2,200 loads of laundry per year, providing free clean clothes and linens to the many homeless youth that the shelter helps.

When asked why the charity chose cleaning supplies to donate, Executive Director Francis Genovese stated, "We decided on laundry detergent because it's a fixed, but often surprise expense, with teens they go through so much of it. It's these types of expenses that add up, and really impact the bottom line. Now for a year, they are covered."

Hand To Hand gets its primary funding through an environmental waste diversion service, that operates used clothing donation bins. When asked about Hand to Hands stand on Green initiatives Daniela Siggia, program director of Hand to Hand, answered "as an organization that supports environmental initiatives, we were impressed that vinegar is used at CHOICES Youth Shelter in place of more toxic cleaners. We were happy to provide a year's supply of that for them as well."

Hand To Hand Community Services has taken an interest in youth homelessness in Dufferin County, and intends on providing long term support to CHOICES Youth Shelter.

The Director Of Program Development for Hand To Hand Community Services has been researching possible fundraising initiatives throughout Dufferin County, and throughout Southwestern Ontario. Hand to Hand hopes to help Choices provide a platform for a community business network that would help manifest a day-centre for CHOICES Youth Shelter. The Day Center would offer structured programs on life and work skills development, that would help their clients permanently transcend their negative circumstances in a society-positive way.

When asked how local businesses can help support Hand to Hand's initiatives Daniela Siggia answered, "Donating money & services is awesome but a really easy and no-cost way to support Hand To Hand is to allow us to place a used clothing donation bin at your place of business. We maintain them daily and it's at no cost to our host. We place bins throughout South Western Ontario & support great local charities throughout the province. Allowing us to place a bin has the most positive impact on our ability to maintain funding and provide help in the areas we operate."
