Press Release: Nanaimo Home to Canada's First Google Qualified Geo 3D Developer

Bookmark and Share

Nanaimo, British Columbia continues to be a Google Earth hot spot, attracting new business, new services and new opportunities to Vancouver Island.

November 5, 2010 – Nanaimo, BC, Canada - Nanaimo’s Judith Chinn has been named the country’s first Google Geo 3D Certified Developer.

The program was designed to recognize Google experts, and to provide those in need of development support with a directory of trusted references.

“I was thrilled when Google contacted me to participate in beta testing for their program,” says Chinn, who creates interactive 3D models of buildings and structures to showcase on Google Earth.

To qualify, she had to write a two-hour exam and provide Google with “a mountain” of information, work examples and references. Two weeks into the process, Google notified her that she had become Canada’s first recipient of this certification.

“I felt like I had just won an Olympic Gold Medal for Canada. I’m so pleased to show the world that Canada is also a nation of progressive technologists,” says Chinn.

Nanaimo has been on Google’s radar for some time now.In 2008, the city was crowned, Google Earth’s Capital of the World. In 2010, a team of Nanaimo citizens participated in Google’s Model Your Town Competition to attempt to win a $10,000 cash prize for the local school district.

Google Earth 3D buildings can be viewed by downloading a free copy of the Google Earth software, or by clicking the Earth tab in Google Maps and downloading the Google Earth plug-in. Google is working on getting the 3D buildings to show up on mobile devices like iPhones and iPads.

“Many people out there would like to get their business modeled in 3D for Google Earth, but don't have the time or expertise to use software to do it themselves,” says Chinn, who runs JAC GeoDesign.

Her most recent models include the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, the Nanaimo Ice Centre and Thyme 4 Healing Wellness Centre.
