Recent winners of the “Association of Educational Publishers” Distinguished Achievement Award, as well as the “Parent Tested, Parent Approved” Winner’s Seal, Moonjar Canada is pleased to announce our fall 2010 Financial Literacy Classroom Contest. This free contest aims to encourage teaching financial literacy to our youngest learners.

One lucky Canadian elementary class will win a Moonjar Classroom Kit, and with it, a chance for the students to learn valuable money lessons.  The Moonjar Classroom Kit, created for schools and community groups and aimed at grades K-3, contains all the tools needed to integrate financial literacy into any curriculum, including the award winning Moonjar Moneyboxes and lesson plan.

The Moonjar Moneybox is a teaching bank divided into three individual compartments:  one each for Saving, Spending and Sharing. It is a tool that teachers and parents can use to help teach basic financial management and reinforce positive money habits to children.  Moonjar Moneyboxes foster opportunities for conversations about money.  With the Moonjar Classroom Kit and Moneyboxes, children learn the basics of budgeting and planning, about needs and wants, as well as about opportunities to donate to causes that are important to them.  Children learn that there are choices to be made with money and that money is a tool – nothing more, nothing less.

Brent Dobson from Moonjar Canada says “our first two classroom contests were really successful in terms of awareness and participation.  The feedback we received from educators and parents was very supportive and they encouraged us to do another contest this fall.  Our goal is to help as many kids learn about money and philanthropy as possible.  Teaching young children about money can be difficult for parents and teachers, and the Moonjar Moneyboxes and the Classroom Kits are a great way to introduce basic money management.  This contest gives us the chance to positively impact a whole classroom of kids, and that’s a great feeling. All the experts agree that we must start teaching financial literacy to kids at a young age.  We believe children should grow up understanding the basic financial pillars of “save, spend and share” just as they do for “stop, look and listen”.

The free contest is aimed at Classrooms or Community Groups between grades K-3.  Deadline for registration is November 12, 2010 and there is no purchase necessary.  Contest details and sign-up information is available at:

This first contest was an overwhelming success and took place in May 2009.  The winning class was from Forest Hills School in Saint John, NB.  Teacher, Ms. Greer who used her Classroom Kit with her grade 3 class said,

In light of today's economy it has become increasingly important that our youth develop strong financial habits.  As an educator, I am so very pleased to have the chance to use Moonjar Moneyboxes as a teaching tool to encourage financial literacy. It is essential that our students learn healthy financial management habits and a sense of social responsibility that will benefit them their entire lives. My students are excited about the fun and educational Moonjars. They are an amazing tool to spark dialogue regarding achieving goals and sharing with others. Thank you for this opportunity!
