Long distance runners with a passion for running and helping their community have an exciting opportunity to break a world record and celebrate Canada's 150th birthday!

WireService.ca Media Release (05/10/2017) Calgary, AB - MitoCanada is looking for 40 more runners to complete its 150 person team at the Calgary Marathon to smash the record of most linked runners to complete a marathon.

Attached at the waist (see photo) runners will "join" in the fun, literally, as runners will collectively travel 6,300 km or practically the distance between Vancouver & Halifax, over the course of the marathon. The team, united by its love of running and giving back to community will also represent the diversity, inclusiveness and multiculturalism that makes Canada so special.

The Guinness World Record Attempt is a fundraiser for the Scotiabank Charity Challenge's official charity: MitoCanada. With 2 world records under his belt, Calgarian Blaine Penny, co-founder of the national charity MitoCanada is taking on a new challenge with this latest endeavour - bringing together 150 marathoners of various abilities to attempt a record for the most linked runners to complete a marathon (current record is 84 people).

"This is a great opportunity to raise awareness for MitoCanada and mitochondrial disease, so why not put yourself out there and meet other passionate runners in the process" says Penny.

"I feel truly lucky to regularly run with a group of supportive and healthy friends who are able to come together to challenge a world record. This event is about expanding the network of runners who can be new ambassadors for the cause. As a team, we will live our motto - running for those who can't."

About Mitochrondial Disease and MitoCanada

Mitochondrial disease is a group of disorders caused by dysfunctional mitochondria affecting thousands of Canadians. Mitochondria are tiny structures inside almost every cell in your body; all the way from your skin to the internal organs. Their main job is to use the food and oxygen that enter the cells to make energy. Almost all of the energy your body needs for daily life and growth comes from mitochondria.

There is no cure for Mitochondrial disease and minimal treatments. Promising research is underway across the world that will help us learn more about these diseases and find new treatments and therapies.

MitoCanada is Canada's only not-for- profit organization with a mission to transform the outlook for anyone facing a diagnosis of mitochondrial disease.
