Hand To Hand Community Services Fdn board members filled two vehicles with $1100 of pasta, sauce and breakfast cereal on Monday December 17, 2012 and drove to Peterborough Ontario where it was donated to YES Emergency Shelter, serving the area's youth for approximately a decade.

WireService.ca Press Release - Dec 17, 2012 - Case Manager, Wyatt Lamoureux was on hand to welcome the donation but also to discuss the matter of youth homelessness & shelter needs with two of Hand To Hand's Directors, Francis Genovese & Daniela Siggia.

Since the doors of YES Emergency Shelter opened, they have served 3000 area youth and currently serve 250 new clients a month. Besides emergency shelter, YES offers advocacy services helping young residents secure housing, social services and employment.

Wyatt, a case manager for the shelter, explained that although the shelter is busy, there is also large number of invisible homeless youth living with friends or couch surfing. In Peterborough squatting is a common occurrence, where several people inhabit an abandoned room because there is no where else for them to go.

Although hard item donations like food, towels and bedding are always welcome, the shelter could really benefit from more community volunteers as well as ongoing funding to develop life skills programs to empower their clients to transcend the cycle of poverty and reduce recidivism. The shelter has already been successful at reducing recidivism from 65% to 45% and with proper funding, that number could be improved dramatically.

Hand To Hand Community Services FDN welcomes the opportunity to network with local businesses to partner up on fundraising initiatives that may help YES Emergency Shelter with the programs they need to help break the cycle of poverty in the Peterborough area. In the meantime, Hand To Hand Community Services created a video, hoping to use social media as a means of raising awareness on the issue of youth homelessness and Yes Emergency Shelter services and needs.
