In celebration of the non-apocalypse today, Hand To Hand Community Services Fdn donated over 700 pounds of food to the Neighbour 2 Neighbour Centre in Hamilton to assist them in raising food for their annual holiday rush.

WireService.ca Press Release - Hamilton, Ontario - Dec 21, 2012 - Neighbour 2 Neighbour Center is located on Athens St in Hamilton, and has been serving Hamilton's community for over 25 years. When Neighbour 2 Neighbour Centre first opened they were helping around 300 families a month. However, demand has since risen and now Neighbour 2 Neighbour Centre helps over 1200 families a month. This added volume puts pressure on the charity to supply the many families that rely on them to meet their basic requirements for food, which is why it is so important for families, organizations, and anyone who can help to bring food, toys and books to Neighbour 2 Neighbour Centre, and assist them in meeting their growing demand.

Besides helping provide food, Neighbour 2 Neighbour also offers referral services, and support for just about every issue a struggling family can face, including a touching Christmas Hamper program that ensures that Santa can visit every Hamilton home on Christmas. In the summer they offer a farmers market providing fresh produce to those who otherwise could not buy it.

Francis Genovese, Executive Director of Hand To Hand was moved especially by N2N's bookstore on the premises. Although clothing recycling bins traditionally do not accept books, they are often donated anyway, and finding a place to send them is often problematic. "These are the types of win-win situations that I get excited about. We will keep them supplied with books, definitely."

Neighbour 2 Neighbour Centre also provides a tutoring service. The program started 10 years ago in one school and has since expanded to 12 schools, serving 200 children through the generous support of over 100 volunteers. Daniela Siggia, Program Director for Hand To Hand puts a focus on programs that also support education. "I really believe that education can break the cycle of poverty as well as crime, and so those are the types of initiatives I like to support. It's about targeting the long term, and it's so important because of the ripple effect that it has on the community."

As they left the building, Francis was overheard saying "We don't even need to discuss this one, in Hamilton, Neighbour 2 Neighbour is our charity. We are going to take care of these guys. What a great place."

Hand To Hand Community Services receives stable funding from Triple R Recycling, an environmental waste diversion service that helps keep landfills from receiving an estimated 900,000 tons of recyclable textile waste a year. Triple R Recycling does this through their many clothing recycling bins across the province of Ontario. The clothes that are collected are not sold to thrift stores. Instead, donations are sorted and shipped to countries around the world, that lack in affordable clothing. Hand To Hand focuses on redirecting those donations back to the local communities where businesses & property managers offer their support, by permitting clothing bins to be placed on their properties at no cost.
