Vancouver heavy metal band offers fans an inside look at the creation of its sixth studio album while preparing for an extensive national tour and major festival appearances
A Darker and More Personal Chapter for Iron Kingdom
VANCOUVER — Canadian traditional heavy metal band Iron Kingdom has released a new behind-the-scenes mini-documentary that takes fans inside the creation of its latest album, Shadows and Dust, which debuted on June 6, 2026.
The short film provides an intimate look at the Vancouver-based group’s songwriting and recording process, showcasing how the band developed what members describe as one of their most emotionally intense and thematically ambitious records to date. The documentary highlights the collaborative nature of the band’s creative process and explores the personal experiences and ideas that shaped the album.
Shadows and Dust marks Iron Kingdom’s sixth full-length studio release and represents a notable evolution in the band’s sound and lyrical direction. While remaining firmly rooted in the classic heavy metal traditions that have defined the group since its formation in 2011, the album ventures into deeper emotional and philosophical territory.
“The album explores a dark realm of topics, from death, hardship, and the lowest points of human emotion, balanced by music that offers hope and the will to fight on,” says bassist and lyricist Leighton Holmes.
Exploring Themes of Mortality, Resilience and Reflection
The 10-track album spans 48 minutes and combines the spirit of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) with melodic storytelling and the band’s signature twin-guitar sound.
Its songs draw inspiration from a broad range of sources, including history, mythology, fantasy literature and personal reflection. Tracks such as Defenders reference the Battle of Gdansk, while Deadhouse Gates and Blood and Steel draw from the fantasy world of the Malazan book series. Other songs examine themes such as compassion, time and personal purpose.
According to the documentary, many of these concepts emerged organically during rehearsals as band members developed ideas together rather than following a rigid songwriting structure.
“We’re a very jam-oriented band. We walk in with ideas, feel them out together, and let the songs grow naturally,” says vocalist/guitarist Chris Osterman.
The documentary also highlights the chemistry among the band’s current lineup, featuring Osterman on lead vocals and lead guitar, Holmes on bass, Megan Merrick on lead guitar and Max Friesen on drums. Band members describe the lineup as the strongest in the group’s history, with the film showcasing the camaraderie and trust that underpin their creative partnership.
Building a Global Reputation from Vancouver
Since forming in Vancouver in 2011, Iron Kingdom has established itself as a dedicated advocate of traditional heavy metal. Influenced by legendary acts such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween, Riot and Savatage, the band has built a reputation for energetic live performances, intricate guitar harmonies and a commitment to preserving the genre’s classic sound.
Over the past 15 years, the group has toured extensively across Canada, the United States, Europe and Brazil. Their resume includes appearances at internationally recognized metal festivals, including Keep It True XVII, and performances alongside established acts such as Night Demon and Blaze Bayley.
The band’s journey has not been without challenges. Through lineup changes, serious touring setbacks and broader disruptions affecting the live music industry, Iron Kingdom has maintained a steady presence on the international metal scene while continuing to release new music independently.
Shadows and Dust follows a catalogue that includes Curse of the Voodoo Queen (2011), Gates of Eternity (2013), Ride for Glory (2015), On the Hunt (2019), and The Blood of Creation (2022).
European Release and Extensive Canadian Tour
To support the new album, Iron Kingdom has partnered with France-based Steel Shark Records for an exclusive European edition. The limited release includes 300 double-CD copies featuring the full Shadows and Dust album alongside a bonus “Best Of” collection drawn from the band’s previous five releases. The label is also issuing an exclusive vinyl variant limited to 100 copies for European fans.
The album launch coincides with an extensive cross-Canada tour that will take the band from British Columbia to Newfoundland and Labrador throughout July and August. The trek includes appearances at Armstrong Metal Fest in British Columbia and Loud As Hell Open Air Festival in Alberta, two of Canada’s most prominent heavy metal events.
The tour will see Iron Kingdom perform in major markets including Vancouver Island, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Ottawa, Toronto, Montréal, Halifax, St. John’s, Quebec City, Hamilton, Calgary and Kelowna, among many other stops.
With a new album, a revealing documentary and one of its most ambitious touring schedules to date, Iron Kingdom is entering a new chapter that blends the band’s traditional heavy metal roots with a deeper exploration of human struggle, perseverance and hope.
