Opening Night Gala Film: Amazon Falls Directed by Katrin Bowen

The Female Eye 2011 presents provocative, controversial, and revelatory short, documentary and feature films as seen through the lens of The Female Eye celebrating international women directors. The Female Eye is delighted to announce its Opening Night Feature Gala & Reception with Award-winning director Katrin Bowen’s feature film Amazon Falls.  Presented at the Carlton Cinema on March 17, 2011, Amazon Falls will continue with its Canadian Theatrical Release March 18 through 24th sponsored by NOW Magazine. This festival-opening premiere will be followed by a Q & A with the director and then a cocktail reception at the Carleton Café & Bar.

Amazon Falls tells the story of a faded B-movie actress, who refuses to give up her dream of being a star. She is on the cusp of forty and, as the clock ticks, feels it’s now or never. Despite her best efforts to live clean and expand her skills, Jana is ultimately overcome by the burden of a dream in a business that seems to punish more for virtue than vice. Faced with unending futility and diminishing returns, when is it time to finally let the dream go? The film features a tour de force performance by April Telek (Flight 93) as Jana and is supported by a stellar, award winning cast featuring Anna Mae Routledge, Zak Santiago, Ben Ratner, William B. Davis and Tom Braidwood.

An official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival (2010), Director Bowen recalls her inspiration:

“The seed of the idea for "Amazon Falls" came when I was reminded of being an 18-year-old b-movie actress in a cutthroat town. During that time, I was mentored by a group of women who taught me the rules for survival. Rule number one was "Never Forget Your Girls". I am honoured to be opening the Female Eye Festival, a kickass festival that highlights filmmaker’s achievements and never forgets their girls!”

Closing Night Gala Film:  Black Ocean Directed by Marion Hansel

The Female Eye is delighted to close its 9th annual celebration with a distinctive, female perspective on the psychology of nuclear arms circa: the cold war.  Black Ocean; written, produced and directed by accomplished award winning filmmaker, Marion Hänsel, will Close the FeFF, March 20th, 2011 at Rainbow Cinemas Market Square, followed by the annual Awards Ceremony at The Novotel Toronto Centre.

A glimpse into the lives of young French naval soldiers aboard a vessel conducting nuclear tests in the pacific in 1972, Black Ocean is a character driven coming of age story lead by a stellar cast including Romain David, Nicolas Gob and Adrien Jolivet.

An official TIFF selection, Black Ocean looks squarely at the human impact of the threat of war, peace efforts and nuclear arms. Hansel commented on bringing a female perspective to a cold-war film: “Do we women have a different eye, another look at the world, a different sensibility? I don’t know. I do know being a woman director seems so normal and natural to me and makes my life happy and fulfilled.

A long admirer of Hänsel, the Female Eye Film Festival will present a retrospective of her work at the 10th Annual festival in 2012.
