Bookmark and Share

Today, the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) along with its partners, Tag Meir, The Coalition Against Racism, and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding that the Minister of Justice bring up disciplinary charges against Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, for inflammatory remarks he made against Arab citizens and law enforcement, while in his capacity as the Chief Rabbi of Safed. Media Release (05/17/2017) Jerusalem - Judge Uzi Fogelman criticized the State for dragging its feet. He said that Rabbi Eliyahu did not understand his duties as a city rabbi, and he ordered the State to submit its response to the petition by July 16, 2017. If the response is not submitted on time an order to do so will be issued without further debate.

Orly Erez-Likhovski, Director of IRAC's Legal Department said: "We congratulate the Court on the strong position it took today on the issue of racist incitement by state paid rabbis. It is our hope that the Justice Minister do her duty and act against Rav Eliyahu and any state employee who uses his position to incite against a minority. "
