Media Release: Female Playwrights Shine at Next Stage Theatre Festival

Bookmark and Share

Opening in one week, the Next Stage Theatre Festival (presented by the Toronto Fringe) showcases six shows written or created by female artists, representing 60% of NSTF's programming. Media Release (12/30/2014) Toronto, ON - According to the Playwright's Guild of Canada's Equity in Theatre project:

"The most recent PGC Theatre Surveys find that women playwrights do not constitute even a quarter of theatre productions' authorship in the past two seasons, even though they make up 50% of the Playwrights Guild of Canada's membership base, and the numbers for women of colour are much lower yet. Moreover, the results demonstrate that rather than improving upon the 2006 Equity Study figures, there has been regression in rates of representation for women playwrights on Canada's stages."

With these figures in mind, NSTF is proud to showcase the following female playwrights and creators.

Alison Lawrence, Playwright, Piece by Piece
This Fringe Festival veteran presents a tale of strangers coming together in the ICU. Look out for a riveting talkback after opening night featuring a geriatric psychiatrist from Sunnybrook and the chaplain from the ICU at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Jasmyn Fyffe - Choreographer, Pulse
This award-winning choreographer and dancer creates a high energy homage to the Motown music she grew up with.

Caroline Azar - Playwright, DINK
Founder of revolutionary all-woman punk band Fifth Column, Azar has written a crime tale inspired by the tragic story of Colonel Russell Williams that includes choral musical interludes.

Briana Templeton and Gwynne Philips, Creators, Unbridled & Unstable
These Canadian Comedy Award nominees present a new sketch show that pokes fun at an assortment of upper-crust female stereotypes.

Jenna Harris, Playwright, Mine
This emerging playwright debunks misconceptions of lesbian love affairs in a sensual romance directed by Clinton Walker.

Ingrid Hansen, Creator, Snack Music
Known for her quirky and intimate performances (Little Orange Man, Kitt and Jane) Hansen pairs with a musician and a puppeteer to bring your true stories to life in the Factory Theatre Antechamber.
