Community Invited to June 1 Celebration Featuring Music, Food Trucks and Civic Remarks
City says annual event reflects commitment to inclusion and support for 2SLGBTQ+ residents
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. — The City of Cambridge will launch its Pride Month celebrations with a Pride flag-raising ceremony at City Hall Civic Square on June 1, as municipal leaders reaffirm their support for the 2SLGBTQ+ community and broader inclusion initiatives across the city.
The event, scheduled for Monday, June 1 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., is open to residents, community organizations and local supporters. The ceremony will feature remarks from Mayor Jan Liggett, along with live music and food trucks as part of a community-focused celebration.
City officials said the annual flag-raising is intended to recognize the history, resilience and contributions of the 2SLGBTQ+ community while promoting a welcoming environment for all residents.
“Raising the Pride flag is a visible symbol of our commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community for everyone,” said Liggett. “Cambridge is stronger when all residents feel safe, respected and celebrated for who they are.”
Pride Month Recognition Continues Across Municipalities
Pride Month is observed annually throughout June in communities across Canada and internationally. Municipal governments, businesses and community organizations often use the month to highlight inclusion initiatives, celebrate diversity and acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.
In Cambridge, the flag-raising ceremony forms part of the City’s broader equity, diversity and inclusion efforts. Officials said the event also serves as an opportunity to recognize the achievements and contributions of the 2SLGBTQ+ community within the region.
The ceremony at Civic Square has become an annual event in the city’s calendar, drawing residents and local advocacy groups together to mark the beginning of Pride Month. City representatives said this year’s event aims to continue fostering dialogue, visibility and community engagement.
Event Designed to Encourage Community Participation
Alongside official remarks, organizers have planned entertainment and food vendors to encourage participation from residents of all ages. The inclusion of food trucks and musical performances is intended to create a community atmosphere while supporting local businesses and performers.
The City has encouraged residents and community groups to attend and take part in the celebration.
Municipalities across Ontario have increasingly emphasized diversity and inclusion initiatives in recent years, including public awareness campaigns, policy development and community partnerships. Civic leaders have often pointed to public events such as Pride flag raisings as symbolic but important gestures that demonstrate institutional support for marginalized communities.
Cambridge officials said the June 1 event reflects the municipality’s continued focus on building an inclusive environment where residents feel represented and supported.
