ByWard Market Festival Set for Largest Edition Yet with Expanded Venue Network and Community Collaboration
Ottawa’s Capital Punishment Festival is set to return in 2026 with its most ambitious edition to date, as organisers unveil expanded plans for the three-day heavy-music event and launch a call for local business partners and collaborators.
Presented by Chord Productions, the third edition of the festival will take place from 27 to 29 November 2026 across multiple venues in Ottawa’s ByWard Market district. Supported by Ottawa Tourism, the event aims to further strengthen its position as one of Canada’s growing showcases for underground heavy music.
Festival organisers say the 2026 edition will feature a broader footprint throughout the city centre, bringing together a larger roster of artists and venues while continuing to spotlight both established Canadian acts and emerging local talent.
The festival has steadily grown since its launch, attracting fans of metal, hard rock and other heavy music genres. Previous editions have featured performances from acts including Blackguard, First Fragment, Lutharo, Spectral Wound, Martyr and Dopethrone.
According to Chord Productions, the upcoming festival will build on that momentum by increasing both the number of participating venues and the scale of programming throughout the ByWard Market area.
“Supported by Ottawa Tourism, Capital Punishment Fest continues its mission to amplify Canada’s underground heavy-music community, bringing together top national acts and rising local talent for three nights of high-energy performances.”
Festival Growth Reflects Rising Interest in Canada’s Underground Music Scene
The organisers believe the event has evolved into a significant platform for independent and underground artists across Canada. By bringing multiple venues together under a single festival banner, the event offers audiences access to a diverse range of performers while generating activity for businesses in one of Ottawa’s most visited districts.
The ByWard Market, known for its mix of entertainment venues, restaurants, galleries and independent retailers, is expected to play a central role in the festival’s continued expansion.
Festival organisers stated that the third edition will offer “more venues throughout the ByWard Market, more artists from across Canada’s underground, and chaos as the ByWard Market transforms into a multi-stage heavy-music takeover.”
The growing scale of the festival highlights broader demand for niche live music experiences across Canada, particularly within genres that have traditionally operated outside mainstream touring circuits.
Organisers Invite Local Businesses and Creative Partners to Participate
Alongside the event announcement, Chord Productions has launched a campaign to recruit local businesses and community partners interested in becoming part of the festival experience.
Organisers are encouraging participation from a wide range of organisations, including shops, restaurants, galleries, venues and other community spaces. Businesses with creative concepts aligned with the festival’s atmosphere are also being invited to submit partnership proposals.
The initiative is designed to integrate local enterprises into the weekend-long programme and help extend festival activity beyond performance venues.
“If you operate a store, restaurant, shop, venue, gallery, community space, or have a creative idea that fits the festival’s energy, Capital Punishment Fest wants to collaborate with you.”
Festival representatives say participating businesses will have an opportunity to engage directly with attendees while contributing to one of Ottawa’s fastest-growing cultural events.
Band Applications to Open Soon
In addition to recruiting partners, Chord Productions confirmed that artist submissions will open in the coming weeks.
Canadian heavy-music acts interested in performing at the 2026 event are being encouraged to prepare application materials and monitor festival updates for submission details.
