BritBox has released the first look at Edward Bluemel as legendary detective Hercule Poirot in Hercule, a new six-part drama now filming in Liverpool and being produced for audiences in North America and the United Kingdom.
The series, developed by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited for BritBox and the BBC, will offer a new exploration of one of the most recognizable characters in crime fiction. Rather than focusing solely on individual mysteries, the production is being positioned as an intimate portrait of Poirot and a broader depiction of Britain during the period between the two world wars.
Hercule Draws From Three Early Agatha Christie Stories
The six-part series will centre on three of Agatha Christie’s early stories, following Poirot during an earlier stage of his life and career.
The production will also introduce characters who are expected to become future friends and allies of the detective, along with a particular nemesis. The approach gives the series room to explore Poirot beyond the traditional mystery format while retaining the detective work that has defined the character for generations.
Christie’s Hercule Poirot stories remain among the most commercially successful works in crime fiction. According to the announcement, novels featuring the Belgian detective have sold more than 750 million copies and have continued to attract readers and screen audiences for more than a century.
Edward Bluemel Leads Large Ensemble Cast
Bluemel will be joined by an extensive ensemble cast that includes Henry Ashton, James D’Arcy, Calvin Demba, Phil Dunning, Jack Gleeson, Tamsin Greig, James Nesbitt, Guy Remmers, Rebecca Rittenhouse and Mawaan Rizwan.
The cast brings together performers from a wide range of recent television and film productions, including Oppenheimer, Bridgerton, Friday Night Dinner, Supacell, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and House of Guinness.
Bluemel’s casting places him at the centre of a character that has been interpreted by numerous actors across film, television, radio and theatre adaptations.
Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited Lead Production
Benji Walters, whose credits include Code of Silence, The Leopard and Obsession, wrote the series.
Jonny Campbell is directing the opening two episodes. Chanya Button will direct the middle two instalments, while Alrick Riley will oversee the final two episodes. Charlie Palmer serves as series producer.
The six one-hour episodes are being produced by Mammoth Screen, part of ITV Studios, and Agatha Christie Limited. BritBox will carry the series in North America, while it will be available through BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK.
BritBox Expands Its British Drama and Mystery Catalogue
Executive producers include Walters and Campbell, James Prichard for Agatha Christie Limited, Rebecca Durbin and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar and Stephen Nye for BritBox, and Nick Lambon for the BBC.
Fifth Season is handling global distribution, giving the production a route into additional international markets beyond its confirmed BritBox and BBC platforms.
The project adds another major literary adaptation to BritBox’s catalogue as the streaming service continues to focus on British drama, mystery, comedy, documentary and lifestyle programming.
BritBox launched in 2017 and is now owned by BBC Studios. The service operates in Canada, the United States, Australia and the Nordic countries, giving Hercule an established North American platform alongside its BBC distribution in Britain.
New Poirot Series Builds on a Century-Old Screen Legacy
The latest production arrives as Agatha Christie’s stories continue to generate new television and film adaptations for international audiences. Previous Christie adaptations are already available through BritBox, strengthening the connection between the streaming platform and one of Britain’s most enduring literary properties.
With filming now underway in Liverpool, Hercule will seek to distinguish itself by examining both Poirot’s personal development and the changing British society around him. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
