Canadian Veteran Opens 2026 Season with Seventh Career World Cup Podium
Chengdu event highlights strong start for Canada’s triathlon squad
CHENGDU, China — Canadian triathlete Tyler Mislawchuk opened his 2026 campaign with a bronze-medal performance at the World Triathlon Cup in Chengdu, China, continuing a career resurgence that has kept the 32-year-old among the sport’s elite competitors.
The veteran member of the Canadian Triathlon Team secured the seventh World Cup podium of his career after finishing third in the sprint-distance event with a time of 50:16. The result adds to an accomplished resume that includes victory at the Tokyo Olympic Test Event in 2019 and a bronze medal on the World Triathlon Championship Series circuit.
“You just never know when the next podium will be so I’m going to soak this one in,” said Mislawchuk, who finished ninth at both the 2024 Olympic and 2025 World Championships. “With six months of off season, I’m pretty happy with the first hit of the year.”
Strong Run Performance Secures Podium Finish
Mislawchuk entered the race alongside fellow Canadians Liam Donnelly and Martin Sobey in a field featuring 65 athletes competing at one of the sport’s premier venues in Jintang County, located in southwestern China.
The Manitoba native emerged from the 750-metre swim in 12th position, trailing the leaders by 17 seconds. He quickly positioned himself within a lead cycling pack consisting of 48 riders for the 20-kilometre bike segment, which featured four technical laps around the course.
With much of the field remaining tightly grouped throughout the cycling leg, 64 athletes entered the second transition within seconds of one another. Mislawchuk and Sobey exited T2 together before beginning the decisive five-kilometre run.
Sprint Finish Decides Medals
Mislawchuk steadily moved into contention during the opening stages of the run, joining a lead group of 10 athletes after the first lap of the two-lap course.
The front pack remained largely intact until the closing metres, where a sprint finish ultimately determined the podium standings. Australia’s Luke William captured gold in 50:14, narrowly ahead of Switzerland’s Nils Serre Gehri, who also finished in 50:14. Mislawchuk crossed the line two seconds later to claim bronze.
“I ran 14:04 for five kilometres – not a bad way to open the season,” beamed Mislawchuk. “I thought I found a new level running in the off season, so I was happy to showcase some of that today.”
Canadian Team Delivers Depth Across Men’s Field
The Chengdu event also showcased the depth emerging within Canada’s men’s triathlon program.
Donnelly, who won the Asian Triathlon Cup at Subic Bay one week earlier, delivered one of the strongest runs of the day. The Campbellville, Ont., athlete surged up 50 positions during the run segment to finish eighth overall in 50:26, just ahead of his 27th birthday.
Sobey, representing Charlottetown, also produced a strong result, placing 13th with a time of 50:36.
The performances marked an encouraging start to the international season for Canada’s men’s team ahead of a packed summer calendar.
Canadian Women Gain Valuable Experience in Chengdu
Canada also fielded two athletes in the women’s sprint race, with National Development Team members Isla Britton and Sophia Howell competing against an experienced international field.
Howell exited the swim among the top 25 competitors before joining a large cycling pack of 54 riders over the four-lap bike course. Britton recovered after a difficult swim to reconnect with the main group during the cycling segment.
The tightly contested women’s race saw nearly 20 athletes separated by less than 10 seconds during the early stages of the run, although the two Canadians gradually lost contact with the leading group.
Britton maintained her pace through the closing stages to finish 24th in 56:21, while Howell crossed the line 37th in 56:54.
Germany’s Laura Lindemann claimed victory in the women’s event with a time of 55:27. Valentina Riasova finished second after a photo finish, while Great Britain’s Kate Waugh earned bronze in 55:28.
Focus Turns to Mixed Relay Competition
Attention now shifts to Sunday’s mixed relay event, where Mislawchuk, Sobey, Britton and Howell are scheduled to represent Canada in the inaugural World Cup mixed relay competition in Chengdu.
The relay format has become an increasingly important component of international triathlon competition, particularly following its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games. Canada will look to build on the momentum generated by Mislawchuk’s podium performance as the team continues its early-season campaign in Asia.
