The number of females in the geosciences degree course is increasing

Female enrollment rates in the three-year degree course in Geosciences at the University of Pisa are increasing, a sign that is going in the direction of overcoming the gender imbalance in science subjects, the so-called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). In the academic year 2021-2022, the percentage of students enrolled in the degree course was 45.5%, Definitely the opposite Compared to the previous two academic years, when they were around 26%. Speaking in numbers, compared to 9 students enrolled in the last two years, there are 16 registered this year, for a total of 33-34 students across the three years.

Geosciences prepares students to contribute to a sustainable future By knowing the subtle balances that regulate the planet, protecting resources, and mitigating natural hazards – comments Professor Anna Gioncada, Head of the Degree Course – at the same time, the course is committed to promoting gender equality, eliminating discrimination and favoring the integration of graduates and graduates into the world of work and academia. Science and gender equality is central to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We hope to help break down the stereotypes and prejudices that have so far kept girls from choosing careers in science: this year’s numbers give us comfort and motivate us to continue in this direction.”
