City highlights importance of accurate population count as Census follow-up efforts continue
The City of Prince Albert is urging residents who have not yet completed their 2026 Census questionnaire to take part as soon as possible, emphasizing that an accurate population count will play a critical role in future planning, funding decisions and community development.
Official Census follow-up activities began on May 12, with Statistics Canada employees reaching out to residents who have not yet responded. Contact efforts include phone calls and emails, while field workers continue visiting households in person to assist with questionnaire completion.
City officials say a strong response rate will help ensure Prince Albert receives reliable population data that reflects the community’s needs. Accurate Census information is used by governments and community organizations to guide decisions on infrastructure, public services, programs and long-term investments.
Mayor stresses connection between Census results and community funding
Prince Albert Mayor Bill Powalinsky said completing the Census is directly linked to the city’s ability to access financial support from higher levels of government.
“Folks, the bottom line is that every head counted means federal and provincial money for the city. We strongly believe the last Census undercounted our population, and we lost grants and funding like crazy,” said Mayor Bill Powalinsky. “The bottom line is that it is important for so many reasons. But what it comes back to is that it provides funding to do projects and to support the community, and that is Mission-critical.”
The city noted that population figures collected through the Census help determine the allocation of government resources and influence decisions on future community investments. A complete count allows decision-makers to better understand demographic trends and identify where additional services or infrastructure may be required.
Residents have multiple options to complete Census questionnaire
Residents who have not yet submitted their Census information can complete the questionnaire through several official methods provided by Statistics Canada.
The online option allows residents to complete the questionnaire securely using their 16-digit access code through the Statistics Canada Census Portal. Those who prefer assistance by phone can contact the official Census Help Line at 1-833-852-2026 and complete the questionnaire with a Statistics Canada agent. Residents requiring TTY hearing or speech-impaired service can call 1-833-830-3109.
Residents may also complete the Census with assistance from Statistics Canada field workers during an in-person doorstep visit. Those who received a paper questionnaire can complete and return it by mail.
The City of Prince Albert is reminding residents that Census workers follow strict identification procedures to protect public safety and prevent fraud.
Residents encouraged to verify official Census workers
Statistics Canada representatives can be verified through several methods. Official Census phone calls will display “GOC / GDC” on caller ID, helping residents identify legitimate outreach efforts.
For in-person visits, Census workers will carry photo identification cards issued by Statistics Canada. Residents are encouraged to request identification before providing any information.
The city emphasized that completing the Census requires only a few minutes but provides valuable information that supports future growth, service delivery and investment decisions.
Prince Albert officials say every completed questionnaire contributes to a clearer picture of the community and helps ensure that local priorities are accurately represented in government planning.
More information about the 2026 Census and participation options is available through Statistics Canada’s official Census website.
