Streaming Platform Unveils New Local Productions, NBA Partnership Details and Global Content Lineup for Canadian Viewers
Prime Video has announced an expanded slate of Canadian original programming and live sports offerings as Amazon ramps up competition in Canada’s increasingly crowded streaming market.
At its 2026 Amazon Upfront presentation in Toronto on Tuesday, the streaming platform revealed seven new and returning Canadian Prime Original series spanning documentary, reality, comedy and sports genres. The announcement also highlighted the upcoming launch of NBA coverage on Prime Video in Canada later this year under the company’s long-term global sports rights strategy.
The new Canadian productions include hockey-focused docuseries Hometown Giants, hosted by singer Michael Bublé and television personality Drew Scott, survival competition series Surrender (working title), and true crime project The Pig Farm Killer: Robert Pickton (working title).
Prime Video executives said the company is prioritizing local storytelling while continuing to expand its international content and sports portfolio for Canadian subscribers.
“Our Prime Originals slate represents exactly the kind of stories Prime Video wants to tell – bold, surprising, and unmistakably Canadian,” said Brent Haynes, Head of International Originals, Canada, Amazon MGM Studios. “Whether it’s Michael Bublé and Drew Scott building teenagers into NHL players, an intense survival series where expectations, extremes and moral dilemmas are turned on their head, or revealing the truth behind the hunt for a serial killer, each of these projects is rooted in our unique Canadian perspective. We’re investing in creatives and formats that feel authentic to this country and have the potential to captivate audiences around the world.”
Canadian Content Strategy Expands Across Multiple Genres
The newly announced slate reflects Prime Video’s broader effort to build programming tailored specifically for Canadian audiences while also seeking global appeal.
One of the headline projects, Hometown Giants, follows Bublé and Scott as part-owners of the Vancouver Giants junior hockey franchise. The six-episode series will document the pressures and ambitions faced by teenage athletes pursuing NHL careers. The series is scheduled to premiere this fall.
French-language programming also featured prominently in the announcement. Prime Video confirmed the return of comedy competition series LOL: Qui Rira Le Dernier? for a fifth season, alongside a separate Halloween-themed special edition hosted by Patrick Huard.
Additional French-language projects include Complètement dans le champ (Heels in the Hay), a reality series following urban content creators adapting to rural life, and Opération déception (Operation Deception), a documentary examining the controversial 1989 Thailand drug case involving Quebec forestry student Alain Olivier.
The company also introduced Young Farts Trailer Parts, an unscripted comedy-reality series centred on Alberta brothers Jagger and Dawson Glowatsky, who built an RV salvage and resale business that gained significant traction on TikTok. The series premieres globally on July 17.
Live Sports Remain Central to Growth Plans
Alongside entertainment programming, Prime Video used the event to reinforce its growing commitment to live sports in Canada.
The company confirmed that NBA coverage will launch on Prime Video in Canada beginning in October under an 11-year global agreement. The package includes 66 regular season games annually, coverage of the Emirates NBA Cup, playoff games and exclusive conference finals rights in select years beginning in 2027.
Prime Video has also expanded its WNBA partnership through a separate 11-year agreement. Coverage includes 30 regular season games, postseason matchups and WNBA Finals broadcasts over the life of the deal. The 2026 WNBA season launched on Prime Video earlier this month.
“Everything we do at Prime Video starts with our customers – identifying what they love, what they’re looking for, and where we can offer something they can’t find anywhere else,” said Mark Shopiro, Head of Prime Video Canada. “Canadian customers want to see their stories reflected on screen, and every title in this slate was built with that in mind. Combined with global originals, live sports, acquisition films and series, and add-on subscriptions that give access to even more content, we’re building a complete entertainment destination Canadians choose first.”
Global Franchises Continue to Anchor Platform Investment
While Canadian originals formed the centrepiece of the Toronto presentation, Prime Video also showcased its broader international slate.
Upcoming global productions include God of War, adapted from the popular video game franchise, and The Greatest, a drama series about boxer Muhammad Ali produced by and starring Michael B. Jordan.
The company also confirmed the return of established franchises including The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Fallout and Reacher.
Additional titles scheduled for release over the next two years include Elle, a prequel to Legally Blonde, The Terminal List Season Two starring Chris Pratt, and several acquired productions featuring actors including Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, Samuel L. Jackson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Anna Kendrick and Seth Rogen.
Amazon’s broader strategy positions Prime Video as an all-in-one entertainment platform combining original productions, live sports, third-party subscription channels and transactional video-on-demand offerings.
Talent appearing during the Canadian Upfront event included Michael Bublé, Drew Scott, Scott McGillivray, actor Charlie Vickers from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, NBA champion Kyle Lowry and sports host Taylor Rooks.
Prime Video said schedules for the 2026-2027 NBA season and additional programming details will be announced at a later date.
