Thailand-based Canadian musician Mager BooBoo, the solo project of Ottawa expatriate Robert Bachtell Eastland, has released “Monkey See Donkey Do,” the second single from his upcoming debut album, Oops!. The track uses humor, animal imagery and a heavy rock backdrop to examine conformity and the influence of social conditioning.
The new release follows “Dumb,” a song that transformed everyday clumsiness into an offbeat rock anthem. This time, Eastland turns his attention to a broader question: how much of a person’s identity is genuinely individual, and how much is shaped by family, society and established systems?
“Who are we really,” Eastland asks, “slaves to the system, or little sparks of being following what we’ve always been taught?”
“Monkey See Donkey Do” Turns Conformity Into a Rock Chant
Rather than approaching the subject as a serious lecture, Eastland builds “Monkey See Donkey Do” around a playful barnyard-inspired chant and call-and-response structure.
“I’ve got a body, you’ve got a body, we all got a body, and a beating heart,” Eastland sings before moving into the central hook: “Hey monkey be a donkey, just like your momma taught you, just like your daddy did.”
The track mixes “hee haws” with an energetic chorus, using comedy to explore the ways people imitate behavior and follow patterns passed down through families and society.
Mager BooBoo Develops a “Heavy Irony” Sound
The single continues the musical approach Eastland calls “Heavy Irony.” The “heavy” side comes from layered harmonic vocals, crunchy guitars and pounding, self-programmed drum tracks. The “irony” comes through lyrics that poke at modern life while maintaining a sense of humor.
Animal imagery also plays an important role in Eastland’s songwriting. He uses it as a reminder that despite social structures, expectations and conditioning, humans remain biological creatures connected to the natural world.
That idea links “Monkey See Donkey Do” with “Dumb” and is emerging as a recurring theme in the Mager BooBoo project.
“Dumb” Builds an International Audience
Eastland’s earlier single, “Dumb,” has attracted attention outside Canada since its July 22 release. Coverage from outlets in Brazil, Costa Rica, Peru, Italy and the United States has drawn comparisons to bands including Pixies, Arctic Monkeys, Nirvana and The Strokes.
Canadian broadcaster and music journalist Alan Cross of Corus Radio’s A Journal of Musical Things was among those who responded positively to the song. Cross said its chorus would remain in his head throughout the day and invited Eastland to submit a video and short biography for possible wider feature consideration.
The attention has helped introduce Mager BooBoo to listeners internationally as Eastland continues building an audience for the project.
Robert Bachtell Eastland Returns to Songwriting After Decades Away
Eastland, 64, has a musical history stretching back five decades. He began playing guitar and writing songs at age 14 before working in musical theatre, radio and television.
His career included writing and performing for the CBC-affiliated children’s program Cowboy Who? in Pembroke, Ontario. He also spent years fronting the band 101 alongside his brother, Tom.
Eastland has 51 songs registered with SOCAN, Canada’s performing rights organization, and his music has previously received Canadian radio airplay.
He eventually stepped away from music for more than 20 years to pursue a teaching career. After returning to songwriting, Eastland taught himself contemporary music production and learned to use Logic Pro on a Mac Studio to develop the Mager BooBoo project.
He now lives in Thailand, where he teaches English full time at a university while recording music during his available hours.
A One-Man Recording Project With Fictional Bandmates
Eastland performs every musical element of Mager BooBoo himself, but the recording credits maintain the project’s comedic identity.
His fictional lineup includes General Disorder on backing vocals, Colonel O’Korn on guitars, Private Parts on bass and Count Sequence on drums. The tongue-in-cheek aliases reinforce the humor that runs throughout both the music and lyrics.
The setup also highlights the project’s independent nature, with Eastland handling the performances, songwriting and production himself.
Mager BooBoo Prepares Debut Album ‘Oops!’
With “Dumb” gaining international attention and “Monkey See Donkey Do” expanding the project’s mix of heavy rock and satire, Mager BooBoo is continuing toward the release of debut album Oops!.
The record represents Eastland’s return to original music after more than two decades away from songwriting. By combining crunchy guitars, layered vocals, programmed rhythms and humorous observations about human behavior, the album is set to introduce the distinctive “Heavy Irony” sound Eastland has developed since returning to music.
