Historic Collaboration Brings Qawwali and Flamenco Together for a One-Night Performance
Toronto audiences will witness a unique cross-cultural musical collaboration this fall as Massey Hall and the Aga Khan Museum present the North American premiere of Qawwali Flamenco on November 19, 2026. The one-night performance will feature acclaimed Pakistani qawwali master Faiz Ali Faiz alongside renowned Spanish flamenco guitarist Juan Gómez “Chicuelo”, marking the opening performance of the Aga Khan Museum’s 12th Annual Duende International Flamenco Festival.
Scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. at Toronto’s historic Massey Hall, the event introduces Canadian audiences to a production that blends two deeply rooted musical traditions celebrated for their emotional intensity, improvisation, rhythmic complexity, and spiritual depth.
Tickets will go on sale on Friday, July 31, at 10 a.m. ET, with membership pre-sales available ahead of the public release.
A Cross-Cultural Performance Rooted in Shared Musical Traditions
Originally conceived at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music in Morocco in 2005, the Qawwali Flamenco project explores the artistic and spiritual connections between South Asian qawwali and Spanish flamenco.
The performance reunites Faiz Ali Faiz and Juan Gómez “Chicuelo,” whose collaboration seeks to highlight the common emotional language shared by both traditions. Organizers say the concert will feature a specially assembled ensemble of singers and musicians, creating a dialogue that merges the devotional trance of Indo-Pakistani qawwali with the expressive power of flamenco.
According to the organizers, the performance draws inspiration from the historical and cultural links between the traditions, emphasizing their shared themes of spirituality, improvisation, and storytelling. The project also reflects the nomadic and mystical influences often associated with the evolution of Gypsy music.
Festival Opens with International Artistic Collaboration
The concert serves as the official opening performance of the Aga Khan Museum’s Duende International Flamenco Festival, which returns for its 12th edition with a program highlighting global musical exchanges.

Established in 1894 through the vision of Hart Massey, the National Historic Site has served generations of performers and audiences while maintaining a broader commitment to artist development, community outreach, and educational initiatives. Operating as a charitable not-for-profit organization, the venue continues to host Canadian and international artists across a wide range of musical genres.
Aga Khan Museum Expands Global Arts Programming
The Aga Khan Museum has become an important cultural institution in Canada through exhibitions, educational programming, and performing arts events that promote greater understanding of Muslim cultures and their connections with societies around the world.
Developed by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network, the museum is located on a 6.8-hectare campus in Toronto alongside the Ismaili Centre. The museum was designed by architect Fumihiko Maki, while the neighbouring Ismaili Centre was designed by Charles Correa, with surrounding landscape architecture by Vladimir Djurovic.
Through events such as the Duende International Flamenco Festival, the institution continues to present performances that connect diverse artistic traditions while fostering cultural exchange.
