BAFTA-Winning Drama Returns With New Story Set Inside a Young Offenders Institution
BritBox has released first-look images from the third season of its BAFTA-winning drama Time, offering audiences an early glimpse of the series’ new setting and cast as the acclaimed prison drama prepares to return.
The upcoming season will be led by David Tennant as prison officer Bobby Bailey, while Siobhan Finneran reprises her role as prison chaplain Marie-Louise O’Dell. Written by multi-award-winning screenwriter Jimmy McGovern alongside Samuel Bailey, the new instalment shifts its focus to a Young Offenders Institution (YOI), exploring the consequences of incarcerating teenagers and the impact such environments have on both inmates and staff.
The drama continues BritBox’s investment in high-profile British storytelling and expands on a series that has earned critical acclaim since its debut.
Season 3 Examines Youth Incarceration and Personal Accountability
New Storyline Centres on Crisis Inside a Youth Prison
According to details released by BritBox, the third season follows Marie-Louise as she arrives at the Young Offenders Institution after losing her faith. Her path soon collides with that of veteran prison officer Bobby Bailey following a major incident inside the facility.
Bailey, portrayed by Tennant, is described as a custodial manager carrying his own personal struggles while possessing knowledge about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. As guilt mounts, questions emerge about whether he will reveal the truth before the pressure becomes overwhelming.
At the same time, the series follows two teenage offenders, Peter and James, as they navigate the difficult first months of incarceration. James must confront the consequences of a violent act and the strain it places on his family, while Peter faces a moral dilemma involving the death of an innocent man and the competing demands of family loyalty.
The story also explores the development of an unlikely friendship between the two young men, raising broader questions about rehabilitation, accountability and the possibility of personal change within a challenging institutional environment.
Star-Studded Cast Joins Returning Favourite
The first-look images released by BritBox showcase several key cast members featured in the new season.
Alongside Tennant and Finneran, the cast includes Daniel Ryan as Freddie Jennings, another custodial manager within the institution. Jo Joyner appears as Nicola, while Vinette Robinson takes on the role of Erica.
The younger generation of characters is represented by Louis McCartney as James, Ollie McNulty as Peter and Chukwubuikem Molokwu as Christopher.
The combination of established television talent and emerging performers reflects the series’ focus on both institutional leadership and the experiences of young offenders.
