CAMBRIDGE, Ont. — Cambridge residents will have an opportunity to pick up a racquet, learn a new sport and take part in a full day of recreation as the city prepares to host Racquet in the Square at Civic Square on Thursday, Aug. 13.
The community event will transform the public space outside Cambridge City Hall into a temporary hub for racquet sports, demonstrations, live play and entertainment. Running from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., the event is designed for residents of all ages and experience levels, including people who have never participated in a racquet sport before.
Rather than focusing on competition, Racquet in the Square is intended to introduce different activities in an accessible and welcoming setting while encouraging recreation and community participation.
Racquet in the Square Brings Sports to Cambridge Civic Square
Throughout the day, visitors will be able to watch demonstrations and live gameplay while learning more about different racquet sports.
Participants will also have opportunities to try racquet activities themselves, allowing newcomers to gain hands-on experience without needing previous training or experience.
The drop-in format means residents do not have to commit to attending for the entire eight-hour program. Visitors can arrive throughout the day to participate in activities, watch demonstrations or learn more about the sports being showcased.
The event will take place at Civic Square at Cambridge City Hall, located at 50 Dickson St.
Mayor Jan Liggett Scheduled to Open the Event
Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett is scheduled to provide remarks at 11 a.m., coinciding with the official start of Racquet in the Square.
The mayor’s appearance will also provide a media and photo opportunity at the beginning of the event.
Following the opening remarks, programming is expected to continue throughout the afternoon and into the early evening.
In addition to sporting activities, attendees will be able to enjoy entertainment and purchase food during their visit, giving the event a broader community-festival atmosphere.
Event Focuses on Accessible Recreation and Community Participation
Racquet in the Square reflects a broader effort to make recreational opportunities visible and accessible in a central public space.
By bringing sports directly to Civic Square rather than requiring residents to visit a dedicated athletic facility, the event offers a low-barrier opportunity for people to explore activities they may not otherwise have tried.
The emphasis on different ages and skill levels is also intended to make the program suitable for families, experienced players and newcomers alike.
The combination of demonstrations and opportunities for hands-on participation allows attendees to first see how a sport is played before deciding whether to try it themselves.
Eight Hours of Drop-In Activities Planned
Racquet in the Square will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, providing eight hours of programming in downtown Cambridge.
No specific arrival time is required for visitors. The city’s drop-in approach allows people to attend according to their own schedules while still having access to demonstrations, gameplay and other activities taking place throughout the day.
A full schedule of gameplay and additional event information is available through the City of Cambridge’s Racquet in the Square event page.
Downtown Cambridge Event Aims to Connect Residents Through Sport
Community recreation events can help introduce residents to new activities while creating opportunities for people to gather in shared public spaces. Racquet in the Square combines both goals by turning the civic heart of Cambridge into an interactive sports venue for the day.
For residents curious about racquet sports, the event provides an opportunity to learn about different options and experience them firsthand in an informal environment.
With live play, demonstrations, entertainment, food and opportunities to participate, Cambridge is positioning Racquet in the Square as more than a sporting showcase. The event is designed as a day of community activity that encourages residents to get moving, try something different and connect with others in the city’s Civic Square.
