First championship in franchise history to be honoured with parade and public celebration at City Hall
The City of Cambridge is preparing to celebrate a milestone moment in local sports history after the Cambridge RedHawks captured their first Sutherland Cup championship in franchise history.
City officials announced plans for a public parade and community celebration on Saturday, May 16, inviting residents and hockey fans to recognize the team’s achievement and meet players during an afternoon of festivities in the downtown core.
The celebration will begin at 3 p.m. with a parade departing from Galt Arena Gardens and travelling through several downtown streets before concluding at City Hall Civic Square, where events will continue until 6 p.m.
In a public statement issued Tuesday, the City said: “In honour of the Cambridge RedHawks first Sutherland Cup title in franchise history, the City is excited to invite everyone to join in the celebrations with a parade from the Galt Arena Gardens, followed by festivities at City Hall including the chance to congratulate RedHawks players in person, and get an autograph!”
Parade Route and Event Details
Downtown route expected to take approximately 35 minutes
According to the City, the parade will begin at Galt Arena Gardens, located at 98 Shade St., and proceed along Shade Street before continuing onto Main Street, Wellington Street and Dickson Street.
The parade will conclude at City Hall Civic Square at 50 Dickson St. Organizers expect the procession to take approximately 35 minutes.
Festivities following the parade will include public appearances by members of the Cambridge RedHawks, who will be available for autograph signings and fan interactions throughout the afternoon.
The championship celebration is expected to draw large crowds as the community recognizes the RedHawks’ achievement in securing one of junior hockey’s most recognized trophies in Ontario.
Road Closures and Transportation Information
Residents encouraged to use public transit and municipal parking lots
City officials advised that temporary road closures will be in effect along the parade route during the event.
Attendees driving to the celebration are encouraged to use the Beverly Street parking lot or surrounding municipal parking facilities. Public transit is also being recommended, with the Ainslie Street bus terminal located within walking distance of the downtown festivities.
The City said the event is intended to provide an opportunity for residents of all ages to celebrate the team’s championship success and connect directly with players following the historic season.
