Cambridge residents will have an opportunity to celebrate German heritage and one of Waterloo Region’s best-known fall traditions when the city hosts its annual free Oktoberfest Lunch at City Hall on Wednesday, October 14.
The community event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Civic Square, bringing together residents, municipal leaders, volunteers and local organizations for an afternoon featuring traditional food, live music and Oktoberfest activities.
Mayor Jan Liggett and members of Cambridge City Council are scheduled to attend the celebration, which forms part of the broader Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest festivities. The regional festival draws tens of thousands of visitors annually and is recognized as one of the largest Bavarian festivals held outside Germany.
Annual Oktoberfest Lunch Brings Community Together
The Cambridge Oktoberfest Lunch has become a local component of the wider regional celebration, providing residents with a free and accessible way to participate in Oktoberfest activities close to home.
“Oktoberfest is one of the traditions that brings our community together year after year,” said Mayor Jan Liggett. “It’s a chance to connect with neighbours, celebrate German heritage, and enjoy the welcoming spirit that makes Cambridge such a great place to call home. I look forward to seeing residents of all ages join us for this fun and festive afternoon.”
Organizers are encouraging attendees to embrace the Bavarian theme, with residents invited to wear traditional clothing such as lederhosen and dirndls.
The event also highlights the role Oktoberfest plays in bringing communities across Waterloo Region together each autumn. Beyond its cultural significance, the larger festival attracts visitors to the region and supports activity for hospitality businesses, restaurants, retailers and other tourism-related operations.
Free Sausages, Sauerkraut and Live Oktoberfest Music
Food will be a central part of the Cambridge celebration. Volunteers will distribute sausages with sauerkraut to attendees while supplies last.
The festivities will also feature appearances by Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest mascots Onkel Hans and Tante Frieda, who will bring the traditional spirit of gemütlichkeit — commonly associated with warmth, friendliness and good cheer — to Civic Square.
Live entertainment will be provided by the Black Forest Band, with traditional oom-pah music forming the soundtrack for the lunchtime gathering.
A ceremonial keg tapping is also planned as part of the event. The beer will be used only for the ceremony and will not be served to attendees. Instead, water refill stations will be available, allowing participants to fill their steins during the festivities.
Local Businesses Support Cambridge Oktoberfest Celebration
The City of Cambridge credited several local businesses and organizations with helping make the annual event possible through sponsorship.
The Cambridge Farmers Market, Sobeys and Carl’s Choice Meats are supporting this year’s Oktoberfest Lunch, contributing to an event designed to remain free for residents.
Their involvement also connects the municipal celebration with Cambridge’s local business community. The Cambridge Farmers Market, in particular, has long served as a gathering place in the city’s downtown core, while food retailers and suppliers play an important role in supporting community events of this scale.
Celebration Set for October 14 at Civic Square

With traditional food, live music, Oktoberfest mascots and the ceremonial keg tapping, the event will offer residents of all ages an opportunity to participate in the region’s annual Bavarian celebration.
The lunch continues Cambridge’s involvement in the wider Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest while providing a community-focused event that celebrates German heritage and encourages residents to gather in the heart of the city.
