Florida’s underground metal festival returns to Brass Mug for two nights of extreme music
TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Death Fest will return to the Brass Mug in Tampa, Florida, on Sept. 4 and 5, 2026, with organizers unveiling a lineup that blends established extreme-metal acts with emerging underground performers from across the United States and Puerto Rico.
Now entering its eighth year, the independent festival has become a staple within Florida’s underground death-metal scene, drawing attention for its focus on raw and uncompromising acts tied to the genre’s roots. The 2026 edition will feature more than a dozen bands across two nights, including veteran Florida thrash-metal outfit Nasty Savage, Midwest death-metal band Viogression, Pennsylvania’s Leprosy, and Puerto Rico’s Gangrenesia.
Festival organizers described this year’s roster as one of the strongest lineups in the event’s history.
“This year’s lineup fuses rising underground brutality with veteran icons,” the festival announcement stated.
Friday’s program will include Syndicate, Eroguro Phantasmagore, Homicyde, Unholy Disciple, Leprosy, Sacrilous, Viogression and Foreverless. Saturday’s lineup will feature Grave Filth, Ramtha, Gouted Corpse, Coathanger Abortion, Sapraemia, Gangrenesia, Must Not Kill and closing headliner Nasty Savage.
Veteran acts headline alongside emerging underground bands
Among the most anticipated performances is Florida-based Nasty Savage, a band widely regarded as one of the pioneering acts of the state’s extreme-metal movement during the 1980s. Fronted by Ronnie Galetti, known for theatrical live performances that included smashing television sets onstage, the band helped shape Tampa Bay’s reputation as a hub for aggressive metal music.
The group originally released four albums between 1983 and 1989 before disbanding, later reuniting with the 2004 release “Psycho Psycho.” In October 2024, the band released its latest studio album, “Jeopardy Room.”
Festival organizers highlighted the significance of the band’s appearance, noting, “As one of the bands that helped ignite Florida’s extreme-metal movement in the mid-80s, Nasty Savage remains a cornerstone of the scene and a perfect headliner for a weekend built on pure aggression.”
Viogression, another featured act, brings a legacy tied to the early 1990s Midwest death-metal scene. Formed in 1988, the Wisconsin band gained recognition following the release of its debut album “Expound & Exhort” in 1991, which led to touring opportunities with influential acts including Death and Pestilence.
After a lengthy hiatus, the group returned with “A Pure Formality” in 2014 and followed with “3rd Stage of Decay” in 2022. Their most recent release, “Thaumaturgic Veil” (2025), has been recognized within underground metal circles for combining traditional death-metal elements with more conceptual themes.
Pennsylvania act Leprosy will also perform during the festival’s opening night. The band, formed in Pittsburgh in 1988, has maintained a longstanding presence in underground death metal and has shared stages with groups including Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Entombed and Exodus.
“Imagine horror, blood, and gore splattered across a heaping dose of true old-school death metal, shoved into a meatgrinder and served with a smile. This is Leprosy,” the festival release stated.
Festival continues Tampa’s legacy in extreme metal
The festival’s organizers positioned Tampa Death Fest as a continuation of the city’s longstanding connection to death metal, a genre that developed a major foothold in Florida during the 1980s and 1990s through bands such as Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary and Deicide.
“If you crave real death metal, raw, heavy, and unfiltered, the kind Tampa helped define, this is one of 2026’s essential weekends,” organizers said. “Two nights. Zero filler. Maximum brutality. See you in the pit.”
Emerging bands are also expected to play a significant role in this year’s event. Among them is Ramtha, a St. Petersburg/Tampa-based act that combines death metal, thrash, grind and hardcore influences. Active since 2022, the band recently earned recognition as a finalist in the Wacken Metal Battle USA 2026 competition and has developed a growing presence within Florida’s live metal circuit.
Puerto Rico’s Gangrenesia is another newer act drawing attention ahead of the festival. Formed in 2022 in Caguas, the band has quickly gained traction within the slamming brutal death-metal underground through a series of independent releases and live performances.
The event will take place at the Brass Mug, located at 1450 Skipper Road in Tampa. Tickets are being sold separately for each day of the festival.
