Vancouver Celtic punk veterans prepare first full-length release since Fat Wreck Chords closure
Canadian Celtic punk band The Real McKenzies are returning with a new studio album this week, marking a significant moment for the long-running Vancouver group as they navigate a changing punk rock landscape following the closure of influential independent label Fat Wreck Chords.
The band’s new LP, On Yer Bike, is scheduled for release May 29 through Montreal-based Stomp Records. The 13-track record represents the group’s first full-length album since the end of its association with Fat Wreck Chords, the iconic punk label founded by NOFX frontman Fat Mike.
For The Real McKenzies, however, the latest release is less about reinvention and more about reaffirming the enduring spirit that has carried the band through more than three decades of relentless touring and genre-defining performances.
“Proof that even as one era winds down, The Real McKenzies are still charging forward, boots laced and bagpipes blazing,” the release stated.
Band continues decades-long Celtic punk legacy
Paul McKenzie remains driving force behind the group
Founded in 1992 by frontman Paul McKenzie, The Real McKenzies helped establish Celtic punk as a recognizable global subgenre long before it gained mainstream festival popularity.
Known for combining traditional Scottish folk melodies with aggressive punk instrumentation, the band built its reputation through extensive touring, pub performances and high-energy live shows that blended humour, chaos and working-class storytelling.
“Long before Celtic punk became a festival staple, they were out there doing it the hard way, fusing traditional Scottish melodies with the speed, grit, and attitude of punk rock,” the announcement noted.
Despite numerous lineup changes and label transitions over the years, McKenzie has remained the band’s central figure.
“Through lineup changes, label shifts, and enough miles to circle the globe several times over, McKenzie has remained the constant, steering the ship with equal parts mischief, grit, and a healthy disregard for authority,” the release said.
The band’s influence can be seen across the modern Celtic punk scene, with artists such as Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly and The Rumjacks helping popularize the style internationally in the years that followed.
New album blends humour, folklore and classic punk energy
‘On Yer Bike’ explores themes of history, absurdity and rebellion
According to the band, On Yer Bike maintains the signature sound that has defined The Real McKenzies for more than 30 years while introducing a sharper and more focused songwriting approach.
The album spans themes including history, literature, relationships and absurd humour, driven by soaring bagpipes, fast-paced guitars and pub-style singalong choruses.
“Across thirteen tracks, the album rips through themes of love, literature, history, and pure absurdity, delivered with the kind of energy that only comes from a band that’s lived every mile of its story,” the release stated.
Among the featured tracks is lead single “I Wanna Eat Sardines (With Yer Mother),” described as “a cheeky, pub-ready anthem built for singalongs and bad decisions.”
Another standout, “Black Agnes,” leans more heavily into the band’s melodic punk influences while maintaining its traditional Celtic instrumentation.
The album also ventures into darker storytelling territory through what the band describes as the “Sawney Bean trilogy,” inspired by the infamous Scottish folklore figure associated with cannibalistic legends and highway crimes.
The release characterized the trilogy as “equal parts folklore, menace, and the kind of story you probably shouldn’t hear alone at night.”
Independent punk scene continues evolving after label changes
Stomp Records partnership signals new chapter
The arrival of On Yer Bike also reflects broader changes within the independent punk music industry following the recent closure of Fat Wreck Chords, a label widely credited with shaping modern skate punk and independent touring culture.
The Real McKenzies’ move to Stomp Records places the band alongside a Canadian independent label with deep roots in punk and alternative music.
Industry observers have increasingly pointed to veteran punk acts relying on independent labels and direct fan support as streaming economics continue challenging traditional music distribution models.
Despite the shifting business environment, The Real McKenzies remain one of punk’s most active touring acts, having previously shared stages with major names including NOFX, Rancid, Metallica, Shane MacGowan and Flogging Molly.
Over the years, the band’s music has also appeared in films, video games and broader pop culture spaces, helping introduce Celtic punk to younger audiences.
Still, the group insists its identity remains tied primarily to live performance rather than commercial recognition.
“Their true home has always been on stage, loud, immediate, and just a little bit out of control,” the release said.
Veteran band rejects nostalgia label
New release framed as continuation rather than farewell
While many legacy punk bands increasingly market reunion tours and anniversary releases, The Real McKenzies are positioning On Yer Bike as an ongoing evolution rather than a retrospective celebration.
“More than thirty years in, On Yer Bike isn’t a victory lap, it’s a boot to the arse,” the release stated.
The band added that it remains committed to balancing tradition with the raw energy that originally defined its sound.
“With renewed focus and the same reckless spirit that’s carried them this far, the band continues to bridge past and present, tradition and chaos, proving that Celtic punk isn’t just alive, it’s still kicking your teeth in.”
