The story of The Last of Us takes place 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization. Joel, a cunning survivor, is tasked with smuggling 14-year-old Ellie out of the high-security quarantine zone. A seemingly easy task quickly turns into a brutal and harrowing journey across the United States as the two will have to rely on each other to survive.

Among the stars of the first season are Pedro Pascal, the protagonist of the series as Joel, and Bella Ramsey, who plays the character Ellie. Also starring Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Nico Parker as Sarah, Murray Bartlett as Frank, Nick Offerman as Bill, Melanie Lynskey as Kathleen, Storm Reed as Riley, and Merle Dandridge as Marilyn , Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Lamar Johnson as Henry, Kevon Woodard as Sam, Graham Greene as Marlon and Elaine Miles as Florence. It also stars Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker.

The Last of Us, based on the critically acclaimed video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog exclusively for PlayStation platforms, was written by Craig Mazin (who is also the executive producer of the series, who has already received an Emmy Award for Chernobyl) and Neil. Druckmann (creator and writer of the award-winning The Last of Us franchise and co-chairman of Naughty Dog). The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, and is produced by Caroline Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lamm.
