Long-term agreement gives Prime Video exclusive rights to Wednesday night NHL games and select Stanley Cup Playoff series beginning in 2026-27
TORONTO — Rogers Communications and Prime Video have signed a 12-year sublicensing agreement that will make the streaming platform the exclusive Canadian home of nationally broadcast Wednesday night NHL games beginning with the 2026-27 season, further expanding digital access to live hockey across the country.
Under the agreement announced Tuesday, Prime Video will exclusively stream national Wednesday night regular-season NHL games in both English and French, while also securing exclusive rights to select Stanley Cup Playoff matchups each year.
The partnership marks another significant development in Canada’s sports broadcasting landscape following Rogers’ recently announced 12-year renewal of national NHL media rights running through the 2037-38 season.
Prime Video Expands NHL Coverage in Canada
Exclusive Wednesday Night Hockey Begins Sept. 30
Prime Video’s NHL package will include at least 26 national regular-season games annually, beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with all broadcasts available to Canadian Prime members at no additional cost beyond their existing subscription.
In addition to weekly Wednesday night games, the streaming service will exclusively carry two First Round Stanley Cup Playoff series and one Second Round playoff series each season in both English and French.
The move builds on Prime Video’s growing investment in live sports programming and its existing relationship with Rogers and the NHL.
Executives Highlight Long-Term Partnership
Companies Say Deal Will Expand Fan Access
Rogers President and Chief Executive Officer Tony Staffieri said the agreement strengthens the company’s long-term hockey strategy while expanding viewing options for Canadian fans.
“Our partnership with Prime Video builds on the strong foundation we have established together and reinforces NHL hockey as the most valuable sports content in Canada,” said Tony Staffieri, President and CEO, Rogers. “As Canada’s home of hockey, Rogers is committed to connecting more fans to more NHL hockey and delivering more national games with fewer blackouts on Sportsnet, Canada’s #1 sports media brand.”
Prime Video also described the agreement as a significant addition to its expanding portfolio of premium sports content.
“We’re thrilled to expand our partnership with the NHL and Rogers in this landmark agreement, which brings even more premium live sports to Prime members in Canada,” said Jay Marine, Head of Global Sports, Prime Video. “When combined with our hit original series, blockbuster movies, and fast, free shipping on millions of items, the Prime membership is more valuable than ever for Canadian customers.”
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the streaming platform has become an important part of the league’s Canadian media strategy.
“Over the past two years, Prime Video has been a valuable addition to the NHL’s media lineup in Canada, joining Rogers in bringing marquee NHL games to Canadian fans,” said Gary Bettman, Commissioner, NHL. “We’re excited that Prime Video and Rogers are deepening their relationship through this long-term agreement, reflecting our shared commitment to serving English and French-language hockey fans across Canada with premium NHL content for years to come.”
Sportsnet Retains Majority of National NHL Rights
Network Continues to Broadcast More Than 500 Games
While Prime Video gains exclusive Wednesday night and select playoff rights, Sportsnet will remain Canada’s primary English-language NHL broadcaster.
Sportsnet retains exclusive English-language rights to more than 500 national NHL games each season, including Monday and Saturday night broadcasts and the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with the exception of the playoff series sublicensed to Prime Video under the new agreement.
Rogers said the arrangement will allow Sportsnet to continue offering more nationally televised games while reducing regional blackout restrictions for hockey fans.
Prime Video noted that details regarding its NHL broadcast team, production crews and on-air talent will be announced closer to the start of the season.
Streaming Competition Drives Sports Investment
Live Sports Continue to Fuel Subscriber Growth
The agreement reflects the increasing importance of live sports in the competitive streaming market, where exclusive rights have become a key strategy for attracting and retaining subscribers.
Prime Video has steadily expanded its sports portfolio globally, carrying leagues and events including the NBA, WNBA, NWSL, ONE Championship, UEFA Champions League, Premier League matches in selected markets, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon in select countries, and professional boxing, among others.
For Rogers, the agreement complements its broader NHL rights package while extending the league’s reach through both traditional television and streaming platforms.
Beginning with the 2026-27 NHL season, Canadian hockey fans will have a new destination for nationally televised Wednesday night games, as Prime Video joins Sportsnet in delivering one of the country’s most valuable sports properties under a long-term partnership designed to reshape how audiences access live NHL coverage over the next decade.
