Prime Video will release MADDEN, a feature film inspired by the life and career of American football icon John Madden, globally on November 18. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Madden and Christian Bale as longtime Raiders executive Al Davis, tracing a relationship that helped shape professional football and eventually extended into broadcasting and video games.
Directed by Academy Award nominee David O. Russell, the 1-hour-and-50-minute production brings together a high-profile cast that also includes Kathryn Hahn, Sienna Miller, John Mulaney and Shane Gillis.
MADDEN Explores John Madden’s Impact Beyond the Football Field
The film follows Madden’s journey from his years coaching the Raiders to becoming one of football’s best-known broadcasters and the figure behind the Madden NFL video game franchise.
The official synopsis describes the story as follows:
“Inspired by the life of a beloved American icon, MADDEN chronicles John Madden’s incredible journey alongside best friend and true original Al Davis – from a Super Bowl-winning partnership with the Raiders, to becoming football’s most recognizable voice, to building the worldwide Madden NFL video game. MADDEN is the celebration of a brilliant mind whose once in a century spirit and personality, partnership with his daring wife Virginia, lifelong friendships, and infectious love of people and football transcended the world of sports.”
The subject gives the film relevance beyond traditional sports audiences. Madden became closely associated with American football through coaching and broadcasting, while the video game bearing his name developed into an internationally recognized sports entertainment franchise.
For Canadian viewers, the film arrives at a time when Prime Video has been expanding its sports offering alongside its catalogue of films and television series.
