Precautionary Closure Introduced Amid Flooding Concerns Along North Saskatchewan River
The playground area at Little Red River Park has been temporarily closed as local authorities respond to rising water levels on the North Saskatchewan River and the increasing risk of flooding in parts of the popular recreational area.
City officials announced the closure as a precautionary measure after water levels began encroaching on areas near the playground. The decision is intended to protect residents and visitors while river conditions remain uncertain and potentially hazardous.
Visitors have been advised to avoid the closed section of the park and to stay clear of any areas affected by elevated water levels. Authorities say conditions could change rapidly, particularly with additional rainfall forecast in the coming days.
Core Park Facilities Remain Open to Visitors
Despite the closure of the playground, the main area of Little Red River Park remains open to the public. This includes Cosmo Lodge and other accessible sections of the park that are not currently impacted by rising waters.
City officials are encouraging visitors who continue to use the park to exercise caution and remain aware of changing environmental conditions. Signage and updates will be provided as monitoring efforts continue.
The temporary closure reflects a broader effort by municipal authorities to minimise risk while assessments of the situation are ongoing.
City Monitoring River and Weather Conditions Closely
Tim Yeaman, Parks and Open Spaces Manager, said the decision was taken in anticipation of potentially worsening conditions.
“This temporary closure is a proactive step to ensure the safety of residents and visitors while we continue to monitor river conditions and changing water levels,” said Tim Yeaman, Parks and Open Spaces Manager. “With elevated river levels, additional rainfall in the forecast, and the potential for conditions to change quickly, we want to ensure we are taking appropriate precautions. The playground area will remain closed until conditions have been assessed and it is safe for public access.”
The City said crews are actively monitoring conditions throughout Little Red River Park and are prepared to implement additional measures if required. These measures include installing fencing and signage around affected areas to discourage public access and improve safety.
Officials noted that monitoring efforts will continue over the next 48 hours, with particular attention being paid to river levels, weather forecasts and site conditions across the park.
Reopening Dependent on Safety Assessment
According to the City, any decision to reopen the playground area will depend on a stabilisation of water levels and a thorough on-site assessment confirming that the area is safe for public use.
Authorities stressed that public safety remains the primary consideration as conditions evolve. Should river levels continue to rise or weather conditions deteriorate, additional restrictions or protective measures could be introduced in other parts of the park.
The closure comes as communities along the North Saskatchewan River monitor changing water conditions and remain alert to the possibility of localised flooding following periods of elevated river flow and forecast rainfall.
For now, municipal officials are asking residents and visitors to respect all barriers, signage and safety instructions while crews continue their assessment work.
Public Asked for Patience During Precautionary Measures
The City thanked residents and park users for their patience and cooperation during the temporary closure, emphasising that the measures are designed to safeguard the wellbeing of everyone visiting Little Red River Park.
Officials said updates regarding the status of the playground area and any further safety measures will be communicated as monitoring continues and conditions become clearer.
