OTTAWA, October 9, 2026 — Ottawa-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Ash Ravens will release his seven-track album Letters from an Alien on October 20 through Raven’s Nest Music, introducing a personal collection of blues-influenced rock songs exploring identity, isolation and the search for belonging.
Led by the single Last Letter from an Alien, the project was written, performed, recorded, mixed and mastered almost entirely by Ravens at his home studio.
The upcoming release follows several years of recording activity and live performances that have established Ravens within Ottawa’s independent music community.
‘Letters from an Alien’ Explores Identity and Belonging
The album draws on Ravens’ experiences living across Bangladesh, the United States and Australia before settling in Canada’s capital.
Those international experiences influenced the record’s central themes of displacement, self-discovery and emotional connection.
“I’ve felt like an outsider in most rooms for as long as I can remember,” Ravens says. “I’ve lived in Bangladesh, the US, and Australia, and I think part of the reason I keep moving is that I’m searching for the room where that feeling goes quiet. ‘Last Letter from an Alien’ is what came out of that.”
The lead single reflects those experiences through guitar-driven arrangements and introspective lyrics.
Its opening passages address uncertainty and movement, while the broader composition considers the possibility of finding meaningful connections despite geographical and emotional distance.
Lead Single Emerged During Late-Night Recording Session
Ravens developed Last Letter from an Alien during an overnight writing session after struggling to sleep.
“The riff showed up at 3 a.m. on a night I couldn’t sleep,” Ravens recalls. “I picked up my gold top Les Paul and started playing a rhythmic figure, then played it again, and again.”
The composition was completed within approximately two hours.
“That’s how I work,” he explains. “I’m methodical, but I don’t get paralyzed by analysis. When a song is there, I finish it.”
Independent Production Defines New Ash Ravens Album
Ravens recorded the project at Raven’s Nest Studios, handling guitars, bass, keyboards, programmed drums and vocals.
He deliberately maintained relatively simple arrangements to preserve the character of the original performances.
“Most of it is drums, guitars, keys, bass, and voice, recorded directly, one take and done,” he says. “I wanted to keep the honesty in the performances, so I kept the arrangements small and didn’t go back and fix things.”
Two instrumental compositions featuring nylon-string guitar and relaxed rhythmic arrangements provide transitions between the album’s vocal tracks.
The production credits state that artificial intelligence was not used in creating the music or artwork.
The album cover photograph was taken by Shamuna Mizan, Ravens’ wife.
‘Save Me’ Addresses Personal Responsibility and Self-Discovery
Another central track, Save Me, emerged after Ravens completed three albums and more than 70 songs over three years.
The song examines personal responsibility and the realization that meaningful change often requires individual action.
“At some point I understood that nobody was coming to save me,” Ravens says. “If it was going to happen, it would have to be me. That’s why the chorus, ‘will you save me, save me from myself,’ is rhetorical. I already knew who the answer was.”
The track features the album’s only vocal recording completed outside Ravens’ home studio, with engineer Dean Watson at Studio Buckingham.
Ottawa Musician Builds on Bluesfest Appearance and Industry Recognition
Ravens has developed a musical catalogue incorporating blues, rock and country influences.
His previous releases include One Way Ticket, Joyride Blues and Side A.
His career achievements include two Capital Music Award nominations, multiple City of Ottawa Arts Grants and an appearance at RBC Ottawa Bluesfest in 2023.
He has also collaborated with Canadian artists including Bif Naked, cellist Raphael Weinroth-Browne and Kristine St-Pierre.
Seven-Track Album Arrives October 20
The upcoming album features Last Letter from an Alien, If It Leads Me to You, Daydream Glow, Stay Here in This Quiet, Save Me, an extended version of the lead single and This Unnamed Feeling.
Ravens describes the project as an especially personal release.
“This one is raw and personal,” Ravens says of the new album. “The lyrics are more intimate and more real, and I didn’t shy away from being open or vulnerable. Underneath it all, it’s about being a stranger, to rooms and to yourself, and working out that you’re the one who has to bring yourself home.”
With its October 20 release approaching, Letters from an Alien represents another independent recording milestone for Ravens, combining his established guitar-driven sound with more intimate songwriting.
