Province Recognizes Extraordinary Courage of Front-Line Emergency Responders
TORONTO — The Ontario government has honoured five paramedics from across the province with the 2026 Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery, recognizing acts of exceptional courage carried out in dangerous and life-threatening situations.
The awards were presented during a ceremony held at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, where the Honourable Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, recognized the recipients for actions that went beyond the normal expectations of emergency medical service.
The Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery is awarded to paramedics who demonstrate extraordinary courage while protecting the lives and safety of others, often at significant personal risk.
Recipients Recognized for Multiple Life-Saving Incidents
This year’s recipients were honoured for a series of individual acts involving high-risk rescues and emergency interventions. According to the Ministry of Health, the incidents included:
Off-Duty Rescue in Deep Water
One paramedic was recognized for rescuing a drowning man from deep water while off duty, intervening without hesitation despite the personal danger involved.
Intervention During Aggressive Dog Attack
Another recipient was honoured after saving victims who were being mauled by an aggressive dog, despite having no protective equipment available during the incident.
Preventing Escape of Potentially Armed Individual
A paramedic was also recognized for preventing a potentially armed individual from fleeing the scene of an accident before police officers arrived, helping maintain public safety during a volatile situation.
Rescue from Burning Building
Another award recipient was honoured for entering a burning building to rescue a resident trapped inside, an act officials described as demonstrating exceptional bravery under dangerous conditions.
The government did not immediately release the names of all recipients or additional operational details regarding the incidents.
Ontario Praises Commitment of Front-Line Paramedics
Ontario officials used the ceremony to highlight the broader contributions made by paramedics across the province, emphasizing the critical role they play in emergency response and community safety.
“Every day, Ontario’s heroic paramedics risk their lives in the service of their communities,” said Minister Sylvia Jones. “The courage displayed by this year’s recipients represents the very best of Ontario and I am honoured to present this year’s recipients with the Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery.”
The Lieutenant Governor also acknowledged the recipients’ actions and the impact paramedics have on communities throughout Ontario.
“The Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery honours paramedics who stepped forward when it mattered most,” said Her Honour, Edith Dumont, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. “These acts of courage speak not only to their character, but to the difference they make in communities across Ontario. I am proud to recognize their service today.”
Province Highlights Importance of Emergency Medical Services
The Ministry of Health noted that the medal recognizes individual acts of outstanding bravery performed by members of Ontario’s paramedic services. Nominations for the award must be submitted through the nominee’s paramedic service and endorsed by the respective paramedic chief.
Ontario currently employs more than 12,000 paramedics, making it the largest paramedic workforce in Canada. Officials said the province continues to rely heavily on paramedics not only for emergency response, but also for broader public health and community care support.
Graham McGregor, Ontario’s Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism, said the award serves as recognition of the high-pressure environments paramedics routinely face.
“The Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery recognizes the extraordinary courage and unwavering dedication our paramedics demonstrate every single day as they deliver life-saving care often in the most high-pressure circumstances. This award stands as a important reminder of their tireless service on behalf of the people of Ontario.”
The Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs also praised the recipients and the wider paramedic community for their continued service.
“Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery. Paramedics frequently place themselves at risk in the course of their duties. The paramedics being recognized this year went above and beyond by risking their lives to save others. The Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs gives thanks to all paramedics across the province who serve 24/7. We are inspired by the heroism and selfless actions undertaken by this year’s recipients,” said Chief Greg Sage of the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs.
Recognition Reflects Growing Public Appreciation
The annual bravery awards come amid increasing public recognition of the demands placed on emergency medical personnel across Ontario. Paramedics continue to face complex medical emergencies, public safety incidents and unpredictable working environments while providing front-line care across urban, rural and remote communities.
Provincial officials said the bravery medal remains one of Ontario’s highest honours for paramedic service, intended to recognize acts that demonstrate exceptional dedication to protecting the public, often under extreme circumstances.
