GEDfest 2026 will bring 13 tribute concerts to 12 cities across Canada and the United States from October 16 to 24, combining live performances celebrating The Tragically Hip with fundraising initiatives supporting local cancer organizations.
The annual grassroots event honours the legacy of Gord Downie, the late frontman of the influential Canadian rock band, who died on October 17, 2017. This year’s program includes the festival’s first event in the United States, marking a significant expansion of the volunteer-led initiative.
Organizers say GEDfest has raised $732,000 for cancer charities since its inception and has established a fundraising target of $425,000 for 2026. Reaching that goal would bring cumulative contributions to approximately $1.16 million.
GEDfest 2026 Targets $1 Million Fundraising Milestone
Founded in Calgary in 2018, GEDfest has developed from a single community concert into a multi-city fundraising initiative.
The festival operates through 12 volunteer-run chapters, with each chapter directing proceeds toward cancer-related organizations in its community.
“GEDfest is a grassroots musical fundraiser inspired by Gord Downie, the music of The Tragically Hip, and the songs that brought Canadians together,” the organizers say. “It started as one Calgary gathering in 2018 and has grown into 13 events in 12 cities across Canada and the United States. Fans come to sing along, remember Gord and raise money for cancer organizations in their own communities.”
The 2026 fundraising target represents a substantial increase in the organization’s potential cumulative charitable contributions.
Terry Fox’s Legacy Inspired the Festival’s Creation
GEDfest founder Keith Dyck established the initiative after drawing inspiration from Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope.
Dyck envisioned an annual event that would use Canadian music to unite communities while generating financial support for people affected by cancer.
The festival’s stated vision is “to realize a world without cancer through an annual, coast-to-coast community driven movement honoring the life and legacy of Gordon Edgar Downie and the music of The Tragically Hip while raising funds for local cancer charities and creating UNFORGETTABLE moments to those who need it most.”
Tragically Hip Tribute Bands Lead Concert Lineup
The 2026 program features numerous tribute performers presenting music associated with The Tragically Hip.
Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern will host 40 Hours Over and Grace2, while Calgary’s Arrowhead venue will feature performances across two evenings.
Other participating artists include Trickle Down, Velvet Sons, Radio Tragedy, Hipnautical, Ragged Rust, Little Bones, Bush Party, The Hip Replacements and Wheat Kings.
Additional performances will feature Don Law Band, Phantom Power, Judith Morrissey, Music @ Work, Gift Shop, Main Street Exiles, Kates Outlaw, Wyman and Chris Henderson.
Buffalo Hosts First GEDfest Concert in United States
The festival’s international expansion begins October 21 when The Strictly Hip performs at The CAZ in Buffalo, New York.
The Buffalo concert represents GEDfest’s first American chapter and extends the organization’s fundraising model beyond Canada.
Seven Canadian cities will host concerts on October 17, the ninth anniversary of Downie’s death.

Community Participation Supports Local Cancer Organizations
GEDfest’s fundraising structure relies on volunteers, participating musicians, ticket buyers and community donations.
Supporters can contribute by attending concerts, promoting local events or donating directly through the festival’s website.
With its expanded geographic reach and ambitious fundraising target, GEDfest 2026 represents another stage in the organization’s development.
The upcoming concerts will continue the festival’s central mission of preserving Gord Downie’s musical legacy while directing community support toward cancer charities across North America.
