ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — A $4.95-million investment in medical imaging technology at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre is set to deliver faster, more precise diagnostic capabilities for patients across the Fraser Valley. The modernization of the hospital’s magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) department will upgrade aging equipment and introduce advanced artificial intelligence features to improve efficiency and image clarity.
During the construction phase, a mobile MRI unit will remain on site to ensure uninterrupted patient access. The Fraser Health Authority expects the project to minimize service disruption while the existing MRI suite undergoes renovation.
“This is an important step forward in ensuring that the Fraser Valley community continues to receive timely, high-quality care,” says Josie Osborne, Minister of Health. “With approximately 8,000 MRI scans conducted at Abbotsford Regional Hospital last year, we are providing state-of-the-art technology to help reduce wait times and improve access to life-saving imaging for residents of the Fraser Valley.”
Refurbishment Offers Cost and Environmental Gains
Rather than replacing the entire MRI system, the hospital has opted for a full refurbishment of its current scanner. The upgrade will involve stripping the unit down to its magnet—the most critical and expensive component—while replacing all surrounding hardware and software.
“The existing MRI has exceeded its lifespan,” says Kevin Enns, Executive Director, Medical Imaging, Fraser Health. “The refurbishment option allows us to maintain the existing magnet, the most critical component of the MRI scanner, while surrounding it with the latest components to bring it up to top standard in the industry.”
Enns noted that reusing the magnet offers both economic and environmental benefits. “From an environmental perspective it makes sense to keep the magnet rather than replace it. Much like renovating a house, the foundation—in this case the magnet—will remain in place while the physical components of the machine are replaced and MRI suite is renovated,” he explained.
New MRI Technology Brings Speed and Comfort
When completed, the refurbished system—known as the Signa Artist 1.5 EVO MR30—will integrate AI-driven image processing, advanced coils, and new software designed to produce higher-resolution scans. The technology promises sharper images for complex anatomical areas, enhancing the hospital’s ability to detect conditions ranging from neurological disorders to cancers and cardiac issues.
The new MRI also introduces patient-centred design improvements. It can accommodate both head-first and feet-first entry positions, includes a tilt feature for better head and neck alignment, and offers a larger bore to make scans more comfortable for patients of different body types.
Importantly, the upgraded MRI can complete some scans up to 50 per cent faster than the existing unit. It is also significantly quieter—a change expected to reduce stress for patients who experience anxiety or claustrophobia during imaging procedures.
Local Foundations Drive Funding Support
The Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation (FVHCF) and The Crystal Gala Foundation have played a key role in supporting the MRI upgrade. Together, community donors have raised $1 million toward the project’s total cost.
“It is imperative that we have advanced technology and uninterrupted access to MRI services in the Fraser Valley,” says Liz Harris, Executive Director, Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation. “The Foundation partnered with The Crystal Gala Foundation, which has raised $1 million for the MRI upgrade.”
“I can’t thank our donors enough for helping to equip Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre with vital equipment that allows residents of the Fraser Valley to get the diagnosis and treatment they need in their own community,” says Gerri Charles, Chair, Crystal Gala Foundation.
Expanded Capacity for Advanced Diagnostics
The introduction of the Signa Artist MRI will enhance the hospital’s ability to detect a broad range of medical conditions. Advanced MRI technology is used to identify abnormalities of the brain and spine, soft-tissue injuries, tumours, cysts, and cancers in the breast, brain, abdomen, prostate, and lymph nodes. It also plays a vital role in diagnosing cardiac and neurological diseases.
The project underscores Fraser Health’s commitment to maintaining modern, sustainable medical infrastructure while expanding diagnostic capacity for a rapidly growing region.
The modernized MRI is expected to be operational next year, offering Fraser Valley residents faster, quieter, and more precise imaging without the need to travel outside their community.
