San Diego-based melodic deathcore band Cascade Effect has released its new single and music video, “Rogue Wave,” ahead of the January 8, 2027, launch of its 13-track album, The Weight of Nothingness, through Eclipse Records.
Directed by filmmaker Oz Riveros, the video combines storm imagery, live performance and personal archival footage to explore themes of mortality, human connection and the growing influence of digital technology. The release follows the band’s victory at Wacken Metal Battle USA and its subsequent appearance at Germany’s Wacken Open Air festival.
Cascade Effect Introduces New Album With ‘Rogue Wave’
“Rogue Wave” serves as the first of three planned music videos supporting The Weight of Nothingness.
The track combines elements of deathcore, groove metal and melodic death metal, incorporating aggressive guitar arrangements, rhythmic passages and melodic vocals.
Riveros directed the accompanying video around the visual concept of a powerful ocean storm.
Large-scale projections of crashing waves, changing lighting and water effects surround the band’s performance, creating an atmosphere intended to reflect the song’s intensity.
The production also incorporates archival footage showing personal moments involving friends and family.
These contrasting images connect the song’s themes of uncertainty and emotional vulnerability with the importance of maintaining meaningful relationships.
Dustin Keimig Discusses Technology and Human Connection
Vocalist Dustin Keimig said the song reflects concerns about how quickly personal circumstances can change and how digital technology can interfere with relationships.
“The personal connection to “Rogue Wave” comes from looking at the world around me and realizing how easy it is to lose sight of what actually matters.” explains vocalist Dustin Keimig.
“We’re constantly connected to devices, information, algorithms, and opinions, yet somehow it feels like people are becoming more disconnected from each other. At the same time, I’m aging, watching people I care about age, lose loved ones, experience unexpected tragedy, or sometimes disappear from our lives entirely. It makes me think about how important it is to appreciate the people and experiences we have while they’re still here. The real world is right in front of us, and I don’t want to let it pass by because I was too consumed by all the noise.”
The ocean imagery represents both unexpected personal challenges and the overwhelming presence of artificial intelligence and digital information.
The archival sequences also establish a connection with the band’s forthcoming video for “My Devil’s Hour,” which will explore darker psychological themes.
The Weight of Nothingness Set for January 8 Release
The upcoming album examines mortality, isolation, regret, fear and the search for meaning through 13 songs.
Cascade Effect combines low-tuned guitar arrangements with progressive influences, groove-oriented rhythms and melodic passages.
The band’s sound draws comparisons to established metal acts including Slipknot, Gojira, Lamb of God, Parkway Drive, Machine Head and Killswitch Engage.
Album Production and Musical Direction
The Weight of Nothingness was engineered and mixed by Matthew Denis at Skylit Sound and Total Access.
Denis has previously worked with Nothing More, Greywind and Diamante.
Mastering was completed by Miro Kiiski at Miro Mastering, whose credits include Hypocrisy, PAIN and Beast in Black.
Keimig created the album’s cover artwork.
Among the album’s central compositions, “My Devil’s Hour” examines isolation and intrusive thoughts, while the title track explores existential questions about mortality and the value of human existence.
