Vancouver Metal Veterans Launch New Record Alongside Nationwide Summer Tour
Canadian heavy metal band Iron Kingdom has officially released its sixth studio album, Shadows and Dust, marking another milestone for the Vancouver-based group as it expands its international reach through a new European distribution partnership and an extensive cross-country tour.
The album became available worldwide on June 6 through the band’s independent channels and partner labels. At the same time, Iron Kingdom announced a new partnership with French label Steel Shark Records, which will oversee the album’s European release.
Under the agreement, Steel Shark Records will issue a limited European edition of the album featuring 300 double-CD copies. The first disc contains the full Shadows and Dust release, while the second includes a compilation of tracks from the band’s previous five albums. The label is also producing an exclusive third vinyl colour edition limited to 100 copies for European fans.
The release comes as Canadian independent metal acts continue finding opportunities in overseas physical media markets, particularly in Europe, where demand for traditional heavy metal vinyl and collector editions remains strong.
New Album Continues Band’s Classic Heavy Metal Direction
Themes of Hardship and Perseverance Drive the Record
Formed in 2011, Iron Kingdom has built its reputation around traditional heavy metal influenced by bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween and Rush.
The group says Shadows and Dust maintains that foundation while incorporating progressive and neo-classical elements across its 10-track, 48-minute runtime.
Lead vocalist and guitarist Chris Osterman described the band’s musical direction as “classic, powerful, epic, adventurous, and melodic.”
Lyrically, the album focuses on emotional struggle, resilience and survival through difficult periods.
“It speaks of some very low points in human emotions… but I also think that’s exactly what will make this album accessible to people going through tougher times… the music shows hope for a positive way out,” adds Osterman.
The album artwork also reflects those themes. According to the band, the cover image — inspired by the track “Blood and Steel” — depicts an army crossing a harsh landscape as a metaphor for enduring hardship.
“Life is often like this: we have to go through things that are uncomfortable, even dangerous, to reach the position we need to be,” adds bassist Leighton Holmes.
Singles Blend Fantasy Themes With Historical Inspiration
New Tracks Draw From Literature and Family History
Ahead of the album launch, Iron Kingdom released three singles designed to showcase the range of material featured on Shadows and Dust.
The track “Deadhouse Gates” draws inspiration from the fantasy series Malazan Book of the Fallen, combining melodic heavy metal with mystical themes. “Blood and Steel” centres on a soldier stranded far from home, while “Defenders” pays tribute to the Battle of Gdansk and incorporates elements tied to Osterman’s Polish family background.
“Even though this song is fast and heavy… I think it speaks to the courage of those who defend their families, their friends, and their way of life,” adds Osterman.
Music industry observers note that storytelling rooted in literature, mythology and history has remained a defining characteristic of traditional and power metal genres, helping bands maintain loyal audiences despite shifting mainstream music trends.
Cross-Canada Tour Highlights Growing Independent Metal Network
Festival Appearances Include Armstrong Metal Fest and Loud As Hell
To support the release, Iron Kingdom is launching a lengthy Canadian tour spanning British Columbia, the Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.
The tour includes appearances at Armstrong Metal Fest in British Columbia and Loud As Hell Open Air Festival in Alberta, two of the country’s best-known independent heavy metal festivals.
The band will also perform in major Canadian cities including Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax and Calgary, alongside stops in northern communities such as Whitehorse and Yellowknife.
Industry analysts say independent touring remains essential for Canadian rock and metal bands, particularly as live performances and merchandise sales continue to make up a major share of artist revenue in the streaming era.
Iron Kingdom has spent years building its audience through extensive touring across Canada, the United States, Europe and Brazil while maintaining a largely independent approach to recording and promotion.
Independent Heavy Metal Scene Continues to Evolve
With Shadows and Dust, Iron Kingdom joins a broader resurgence of classic heavy metal sounds that have found renewed popularity among dedicated global fan communities.
While mainstream music markets increasingly focus on streaming-driven pop releases, traditional heavy metal continues to maintain strong physical album sales and festival attendance, particularly within niche international audiences.
The band’s latest release demonstrates how Canadian independent artists are continuing to leverage global fan bases, international label partnerships and touring circuits to sustain long-term careers outside major-label systems.
Looking Ahead
As Shadows and Dust begins its international rollout, Iron Kingdom enters one of the busiest touring periods in the band’s history. With new European distribution, a nationwide tour and growing recognition within the global heavy metal community, the Vancouver group continues positioning itself as one of Canada’s established names in traditional heavy metal.
