Vancouver metal band expands global reach with new label partnership and cross-country tour
VANCOUVER — Canadian heavy metal band Iron Kingdom is building momentum ahead of the release of its sixth studio album, Shadows and Dust, with the launch of its second single, “Blood and Steel,” and an extensive national tour slated for summer 2026.
The album, due June 6 via Steel Shark Records, marks the band’s first collaboration with the France-based label and signals a strategic push into European markets. The partnership includes a limited EU-exclusive double-CD release capped at 300 copies, alongside a special vinyl pressing available only to European fans.
New single reflects thematic depth and evolving sound
“Blood and Steel” follows the earlier single “Defenders” and offers a darker, more introspective preview of the upcoming record. The track is accompanied by a lyric video and explores themes of endurance, mortality and ambition—elements that underpin the album as a whole.
Bassist Leighton Holmes described the song’s conceptual origins, saying: “The inspiration for ‘Blood and Steel’ came from two places. One draws from Steven Erikson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen, and the other from imagining myself as a soldier in Alexander the Great’s army, twelve years into a campaign, thousands of miles from home, questioning how I got there. The endless marching, the battles, the weight of the gear… It’s a brutal life, and in a small way, it parallels the blood, sweat, and tears of touring in a band.”
Musically, the band has experimented with a different structure and arrangement for the track, emphasizing rhythm over melody in key sections.
“We wanted the song to feel like a march. It’s very bass- and drum-driven in the verses, with guitars layered in strategic spots. It’s a different kind of song for us, and I think it’s going to add something special to our live sets,” said vocalist and guitarist Chris Osterman.
Album explores darker themes with broader appeal
Shadows and Dust features 10 tracks and is described by the band as its most emotionally intense project to date. The album delves into themes such as death, hardship and resilience, while maintaining a sense of optimism.
“This album plays in a dark realm. But that’s exactly what will make it accessible to people going through tough times. The music shows hope for a way out. It’s a journey, one we can’t wait for fans to experience front to back,” Osterman said.
The album artwork reflects these themes, depicting an army crossing a barren landscape—a visual representation of struggle and perseverance that ties closely to the narrative of “Blood and Steel.”
National tour to support release
To support the album launch, Iron Kingdom will headline a hometown release show on June 5 at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver, followed by a cross-country tour spanning multiple provinces and territories.
The tour includes stops in major cities such as Toronto, Montréal and Halifax, as well as appearances at prominent festivals including Armstrong Metal Fest and Loud As Hell Open Air Festival.
The band’s itinerary also extends into northern regions, with performances scheduled in Whitehorse and Yellowknife, reflecting a continued commitment to reaching audiences across the country.
Building on a decade of growth
Formed in 2011, Iron Kingdom has spent more than a decade cultivating a following within the traditional heavy metal scene. Drawing influence from genre staples such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Rush, the band has built its reputation through extensive touring and a commitment to classic metal aesthetics.
Its previous album, The Blood of Creation (2022), received positive reviews from industry publications, reinforcing the group’s standing within the genre and setting the stage for its latest release.
With Shadows and Dust, the band aims to balance its traditional sound with new creative elements, positioning itself for broader international exposure while maintaining its core identity.
As the June release date approaches, Iron Kingdom’s combination of new material, expanded distribution and a nationwide tour underscores a significant milestone in the band’s evolution—and a potential inflection point for its presence in both domestic and global markets.
