BritBox is expanding its Ludwig franchise with a 60-minute Christmas special featuring David Mitchell, Anna Maxwell Martin and veteran detective actor Sir David Suchet, as the streaming service prepares to launch the show’s second season on October 13.
The festive episode will add several high-profile guest stars to the International Emmy Award-winning detective series. The announcement comes as Ludwig moves into a broader production cycle, with Season 2 scheduled for weekly release on BritBox and a third season already in production.
‘Ludwig’ Christmas Special Heads to Yorkshire
The Christmas episode shifts the action to Yorkshire, where John, Lucy and Henry arrive at a remote Christmas-themed hotel expecting a holiday escape.
Their plans change when a sudden blackout coincides with a locked-room murder mystery. A blizzard leaves the guests isolated from the outside world and forces them to spend the night knowing that a killer may be among them.
John Taylor, played by Mitchell, is reluctantly drawn into the investigation and must work with the Taylors to solve the crime before Christmas.
Sir David Suchet Joins All-Star Guest Cast
Mitchell returns as John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor alongside Anna Maxwell Martin as Lucy Betts-Taylor, Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor and Dipo Ola as DCI Russell Carter.
The Christmas special adds Sir David Suchet, Jason Flemyng, Joe Wilkinson, Cathy Tyson, Alexandra Roach, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Rebekah Staton, Claire Price, Ariella Glaser and George Rainsford to the cast.
Suchet’s appearance provides a reversal of one of his best-known television roles. After becoming internationally recognized for portraying detective Hercule Poirot, he will instead play a murder suspect in the Ludwig special.
On working with Sir David Suchet, David Mitchell says: “I have long been a huge admirer of Sir David Suchet’s work and have watched every episode of Poirot several times, so it was a dream come true for me when he agreed to appear in the Ludwig Christmas Special. He was an absolute joy to work and spend time with – funny, interesting and generous – and his performance in the programme is wonderful.”

It made quite the refreshing change to be playing a suspect rather than the detective, and to sit comfortably in my armchair while David delivered the denouement. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time.”
BritBox Builds on Success of Detective Series
Created and written by Mark Brotherhood, Ludwig is produced by Big Talk Studios, part of ITV Studios, in association with That Mitchell And Webb Company. The series is a co-production involving BritBox and ZDF for the BBC.
The Christmas episode is written by Brotherhood and directed by Chris Foggin, who is also directing the third season.
The special is produced by Georgie Fallon, with Anya Wilson serving as co-producer. Executive producers include Kenton Allen and Toby Welch for Big Talk Studios, Brotherhood, Mitchell, Kathryn O’Connor and Chris Sussman.
Robert Schildhouse and Stephen Nye serve as executive producers for BritBox, while Claus Wunn and Frank Seyberth executive produce for ZDF.
Season 2 Arrives October 13 as Season 3 Enters Production
The announcement gives BritBox a multi-stage release pipeline for Ludwig. The first season is already available through the streaming service, while Season 2 will begin its weekly rollout on October 13.
At the same time, production is underway on Season 3, extending the series beyond the upcoming Christmas instalment.
The Christmas episode was commissioned by Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy Commissioning, with Gregor Sharp serving as commissioning editor for the BBC. ITV Studios handles international distribution.
For BritBox, the combination of a new season, a standalone festive special and another season in production provides additional programming around an established detective property while bringing recognizable British television talent into the franchise.
The release date for the Christmas special has not yet been specified beyond the upcoming festive season, while additional details are expected closer to its debut.
