Ontario Artist Builds Momentum Toward First Full-Length Album With Reflective Pop Release
AURORA, Ont. — Aurora-based singer-songwriter Laura Fortini is taking a significant step in her emerging music career with the release of “Lights Went Out,” her first official single aimed at radio audiences and a key milestone as she works toward a forthcoming self-titled debut album.
The warm, narrative-driven pop track draws from a personal memory that remained with Fortini for years before she found the right way to transform it into a song. Although it is the third track she has released following “Look In” and “Shattered,” “Lights Went Out” serves as the 23-year-old artist’s introduction to a broader audience and highlights the storytelling approach that has become central to her songwriting.
Written when Fortini was just 15 years old, the song reflects on a late-summer memory rooted in family, community and a relationship that never fully developed.
A Personal Story Turned Into Universal Songwriting
Inspired by a Community Festival Tradition
The inspiration behind “Lights Went Out” can be traced to a long-standing family tradition within Fortini’s Italian-Canadian community.
Each Labour Day weekend, Fortini’s family hosts a large community festival that brings together hundreds of relatives and close friends. Following one of those gatherings, she found herself reflecting on a near relationship that had become a topic of light-hearted conversation among community members.
Rather than focusing on regret, Fortini approached the experience from a perspective of curiosity, imagining what reconnecting with that person might look like if earlier complications no longer existed.
That perspective became the foundation of a song that explores both longing and acceptance while remaining grounded in vivid memories.
Writing from her grandparents’ spare room while her family’s new home was under construction, Fortini drew heavily on sensory details from that evening. Images of a wooden pavilion illuminated by yellow and orange lights, a secluded park surrounded by forest, and the energy of a close-knit community all helped shape the atmosphere of the track.
Exploring Nostalgia, Hope and Emotional Growth
A Reflection on Relationships That Never Fully Bloomed
“Lights Went Out” examines the emotional complexity of a connection that ended before it had the opportunity to fully develop.
The song uses imagery such as “thorns and roses,” “bright-red flags,” and the recurring refrain, “take me back to the moment before the lights went out,” to explore the tension between nostalgia and reality.
Through those lyrics, Fortini reflects on the desire to revisit a moment when optimism outweighed disappointment while also recognizing that some relationships are not meant to endure.
The result is a song that balances vulnerability with self-awareness, offering listeners a relatable perspective on missed opportunities and emotional growth.
Recorded in Vaughan and Released Independently
The single was recorded at Songsbury Studios in Vaughan, Ont., with producer Mathew Teofilo. Fortini released the song independently through her own publishing platform, maintaining creative control over the project.
The track also represents another step toward a larger artistic vision. “Lights Went Out” is one of 14 songs planned for a full-length album currently in development. With three songs completed so far, Fortini continues to build the project around personal experiences that she hopes will resonate with listeners navigating similar emotions and life experiences.
Strong Musical Foundations Shape Emerging Career
Fortini’s musical journey began early. She started piano lessons at age four and voice lessons at six, later completing Royal Conservatory of Music examinations with honours and First-Class Honours distinctions.
At age 12, she added guitar and songwriting to her skill set, opening a new creative path that would eventually define her artistic identity.
She wrote her first song after attending Taylor Swift’s 1989 tour, which was also the first live concert she had ever experienced. That moment helped inspire her interest in songwriting and performance.
Beyond formal training, Fortini participated extensively in choir, theatre and live performances throughout her school years. She also taught herself basic music production, creating early demos that she now credits as an important part of her development despite describing them as rough drafts.
Those self-produced recordings eventually helped secure her collaboration with producer Mathew Teofilo.
Today, Fortini continues her Royal Conservatory studies while pursuing a degree at York University in Toronto, where she studies English, History and Humanities. She has also completed coursework in Concert Choir through the university’s Fine Arts and Music program and is exploring additional studies that could contribute toward a minor in the field.
Looking Ahead to a Debut Album
With “Lights Went Out” reaching radio audiences, Fortini is steadily expanding her presence within Canada’s independent music scene.
The release offers listeners an early glimpse into the themes and storytelling that will shape her debut album while showcasing a songwriter committed to translating personal experiences into relatable narratives.
As work continues on the full-length project, Fortini remains focused on the approach that has guided her since childhood: using music as a way to understand life’s experiences and create meaningful connections with listeners.
