City Moves Programs Indoors as Poor Air Quality Prompts Health Precautions
CAMBRIDGE, Ont. — The City of Cambridge has temporarily closed its outdoor pools and modified several municipal services after Environment Canada issued an Air Quality Warning for the region, citing concerns over the health and safety of residents, visitors, and municipal staff.
The measures, announced on July 15, are part of the city’s response to deteriorating air quality conditions affecting communities across parts of Ontario. Municipal officials said the changes will remain in place until further notice while air quality conditions continue to be monitored.
The service adjustments affect recreation programs, outdoor municipal operations, and public events, while some amenities remain accessible to residents seeking relief from the conditions.
Outdoor Pools Closed and City Programs Relocated Indoors
Under the temporary measures, all outdoor pools operated by the City of Cambridge have been closed. In addition, city-run events and programs, including summer camps, have been moved indoors to reduce exposure to poor air quality.
The municipality has also paused non-essential outdoor work and services. Critical municipal operations, however, will continue to ensure essential services remain available to residents.
The City stated:
“Due to an Air Quality Warning issued by Environment Canada, the City of Cambridge is temporarily closing outdoor pools and adjusting some programs and services to protect the health and safety of residents and staff.”
Municipal officials noted that these actions are intended to reduce health risks associated with prolonged exposure to air pollution, particularly during periods when air quality reaches levels considered harmful to vulnerable populations.
Parks, Splashpads and Cooling Centres Remain Open
While some services have been suspended or relocated, outdoor parks, splashpads, and other public amenities remain open.
The City also confirmed that cooling centres remain available for residents seeking relief from the conditions. Officials are encouraging individuals who may be more sensitive to air pollution—including children, older adults, and people with underlying health conditions—to limit time spent outdoors and follow public health recommendations.
Residents are advised to stay informed about current air quality conditions and take precautions when planning outdoor activities.
Recreation Bookings Left to Organizers’ Discretion
The municipality said outdoor recreation bookings, including sports field rentals and picnic area reservations, have not been automatically cancelled. Instead, organizers and permit holders are being encouraged to assess conditions and make decisions based on current air quality levels.
According to the City:
“Outdoor recreation bookings, including sports fields and picnic areas, remain at the discretion of organizers.”
Municipal officials are recommending that community groups, sports organizations, and event planners consider modifying, relocating, or postponing activities if air quality conditions worsen.
The City also confirmed that refunds will be available upon request for bookings cancelled due to air quality concerns. Residents with questions regarding reservations can contact the Recreation Bookings team by email or phone.
Public Health Officials Urge Residents to Take Precautions
In addition to limiting outdoor exposure, residents are being advised to reduce indoor air pollution by keeping windows and doors closed whenever possible and avoiding activities that can affect indoor air quality, such as smoking or burning candles.
Health officials continue to recommend that residents monitor for symptoms that may be linked to poor air quality, including breathing difficulties, irritation of the eyes or throat, and other respiratory issues.
The City emphasized that anyone experiencing a serious medical emergency should seek immediate assistance.
“Anyone experiencing severe breathing difficulties, chest pain or other medical emergencies should call 9-1-1 immediately.”
City Monitoring Conditions and Providing Updates
Municipal officials said they will continue to track air quality conditions and adjust services as needed. Additional updates will be provided if conditions improve or further restrictions become necessary.
The City is encouraging residents to regularly check official municipal communications and public health guidance for the latest information regarding air quality and service impacts.
As air quality warnings continue to affect parts of Ontario, municipalities across the province are increasingly balancing public access to recreation and community services with efforts to protect public health during periods of elevated pollution.
