BritBox is preparing to bring Agatha Christie’s detective duo Tommy and Tuppence to streaming audiences in a new television adaptation that places the characters in a contemporary setting. All episodes of Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence have now been made available to media for advance review ahead of the series rollout.
The production represents the first contemporary English-language television adaptation of Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence stories, adding a modern interpretation to one of the mystery writer’s enduring partnerships.
BritBox Updates Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence
The new series follows Tommy and Tuppence as both romantic partners and amateur detectives, combining their evolving personal relationship with a succession of mysteries.
Rather than presenting the pair solely as investigators, the adaptation places their relationship at the centre of the story. The characters fall in love, fall out of love and eventually find themselves drawn back together while becoming involved in increasingly complicated cases.
Season 1 will debut with two episodes, followed by one new episode each week.
The release format gives BritBox another serialized mystery title as streaming platforms continue to use established literary properties to attract audiences seeking recognizable franchises and character-driven dramas.
Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan Lead the Cast
Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan lead the ensemble cast, with Imelda Staunton also appearing in the series.
The wider cast includes Nicholas Richardson, Charlie Candou, Callie Cooke and Chizzy Akudolu.
Phoebe Eclair-Powell Writes the Series
Phoebe Eclair-Powell wrote the adaptation and also serves as an executive producer.
Executive producers include Eclair-Powell; Katie Draper, Laura Lankester, Louise Mutter and Juliette Howell for Lookout Point; Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar, Jess O’Riordan and Stephen Nye for BritBox; and James Prichard for Agatha Christie Limited.
Fergus O’Brien directs Episodes 1 through 4, while Ellie Heydon directs Episodes 5 and 6.
Production and distribution partners listed for the project include Two Cities Television, Gallagher Films, BBC Studios and the BBC.
Series Extends Agatha Christie’s Streaming Presence
The contemporary setting distinguishes the production from many previous screen adaptations of Christie’s work, which have generally retained period settings closely associated with the author’s original stories.
Tommy Beresford and Prudence “Tuppence” Cowley first appeared in Christie’s 1922 novel The Secret Adversary. Unlike detectives such as Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, Tommy and Tuppence develop personally and professionally over the course of several stories.
The new series maintains the mystery framework surrounding the characters while updating their world for contemporary television audiences.
For BritBox, the production fits within a programming strategy built heavily around British drama, crime and mystery programming. The streaming service offers British television in Canada alongside its operations in the United States, Australia and Nordic markets.
Review Embargo Set for September 10
All episodes of Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence are now available to eligible members of the media for advance review.
BritBox has set a review embargo until Thursday, Sept. 10, meaning reviews are not scheduled for publication before that date.
The company has also released an official teaser for the series as part of its preparations for the launch.
BritBox Continues Investment in British Programming
BritBox launched in 2017 and is now owned by BBC Studios. The streaming platform specializes in British television, including dramas, mysteries, comedies, documentaries and lifestyle programming.
Its availability in Canada gives domestic streaming audiences access to a catalogue focused specifically on British productions at a time when subscription services continue to compete through differentiated programming libraries.
With Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence, BritBox is combining one of British crime fiction’s best-known literary brands with a contemporary television approach. The six-episode first season will introduce the updated detective partnership with a two-episode premiere before moving to a weekly release schedule.
