Toronto-based guitarist, composer and producer Jeremy Green has reached the top of the Roots Music Report Jazz Fusion chart with his second full-length album, In Motion, marking another milestone in his recording career. The eight-track instrumental release has also climbed to No. 3 on the publication’s overall Jazz chart, building on the commercial and critical recognition of his 2021 debut.
Featuring contributions from internationally recognised musicians including Mike Stern, Will Lee, Keith Carlock, Oz Noy and Jimmy Haslip, the album combines contemporary jazz fusion with personal storytelling. Green is scheduled to perform at Toronto’s Jazz Bistro on November 14, giving local audiences an opportunity to hear his latest material live.
Jeremy Green Builds on Success of Debut Album
The chart performance of In Motion follows the success of Green’s first album, Standing Eight, released in 2021.
That recording reached No. 1 on the Roots Music Report Top 50 Fusion Albums chart and No. 5 on its Top 50 Jazz Albums chart. It also appeared on JazzWeek’s Most Added list and was recognised by Sea of Tranquility as one of the Top 10 Jazz/Prog Rock records of 2021.
Green’s work has received airplay on Canadian station JazzFM and international radio outlets. He has also been featured in Guitar Player magazine.
His latest project represents a return to composition following an extended period away from writing. The album places greater emphasis on improvisation, rhythmic arrangements and collaboration, with each composition reflecting experiences involving family, friendship, professional pressures and meaningful locations.
International Musicians Collaborate on Eight Original Tracks
A notable feature of In Motion is its extensive roster of established session musicians and recording artists.
Drummer Keith Carlock performs on all eight compositions, providing a consistent rhythmic foundation throughout the album. Other contributors include Mark Lettieri, Allen Hinds, Jared James Nichols, Moto Fukushima, Rich Brown and saxophonist Chase Baird.
‘The 55’ Pays Tribute to New York’s Jazz Heritage
The album’s lead single, “The 55,” draws inspiration from the former 55 Bar in Greenwich Village, New York.
The venue played an important role in Green’s musical development, particularly through performances by guitarist Mike Stern and bassist Tim Lefebvre. Both musicians contribute to the recording, alongside Baird on saxophone.
The composition reflects the influence of intimate live music venues on jazz performers and the lasting artistic connections formed within those spaces.
The opening title track, “In Motion,” features Will Lee on bass, Mark Lettieri on guitar and a horn arrangement by Mark Levron. It introduces the album’s improvisational direction and reflects Green’s enthusiasm for returning to songwriting.
“He’s Grinding” takes a more energetic approach, exploring the pressures and momentum of everyday professional life through fast-paced instrumental arrangements.
Family, Toronto and Personal Memories Shape the Music
Several compositions connect Green’s musical interests with personal experiences.
“Where the Sun Shines the Brightest” was originally written more than 20 years ago. Its three-beat time signature represents Green’s three children, while its title comes from a drawing created by his daughter depicting the family beneath a large yellow sun.
The recording features Rich Brown on bass and Mike Stern on guitar.
“And Ah WHAT?” explores Green’s preference for unconventional rhythmic phrasing, with contributions from Allen Hinds and Jimmy Haslip.
The Toronto-inspired “Queen West” reflects the energy of the city’s Queen Street West neighbourhood, featuring Jared James Nichols and Moto Fukushima.
Meanwhile, “Tee Shot” includes performances by Oz Noy, Haslip and Baird.
The closing composition, “Sir Robin,” honours Green’s lifelong friend Rob White, using an extended saxophone passage to conclude the album.
Production and Upcoming Toronto Performance
Green produced In Motion, while Nashville-based audio engineer Jerry Guidroz handled mixing and mastering.
Beyond the musicians featured on this release, Green has previously collaborated with Robben Ford, Victor Wooten, Billy Sheehan, Michel Cusson and Paul DeLong. He is also an official artist associated with D’Addario and VegaTrem.
