Oakland, California power-pop outfit The Goods has released “Minor Key,” the second advance single from its forthcoming album Goodbye Summertime. Arriving August 19 through Dandy Boy Records, the track offers a more reflective preview of the 14-song record, which is scheduled for release September 16, 2026.
Led by songwriter and producer Rob Good, The Goods has built its sound around guitar-driven power pop while incorporating elements of indie pop, psych-pop, jangle pop and sunshine pop. With “Minor Key,” Good turns toward heartbreak, memory and the emotional process of moving forward after a relationship ends.
“Minor Key” Explores Heartbreak and Letting Go
The new single follows “Summer’s Almost Gone,” the first advance track from Goodbye Summertime. While that song focused on appreciating the present before it slips away, “Minor Key” examines what remains after a significant moment or relationship has already passed.
Good describes the song as “a bittersweet goodbye to someone left behind.”
Running three minutes and 38 seconds, “Minor Key” reflects the personal circumstances that shaped much of the upcoming album. Good said the material emerged during a period of major upheaval in his personal life, when the end of a long-term relationship coincided with the beginning of a new one.
“My whole life turned upside down one summer,” recalls Good. “The long-term relationship I was in collapsed, and in the wake of that, I found new love. I was sorting through the grief and failure of my previous relationship and the bliss and anxiety of my new one all at once, all while basically living at my recording studio, and I found myself in an intensely creative state.”
Songs Developed as Events Unfolded
Rather than writing the album over an extended period, Good said many of its songs were created and recorded while the experiences behind them were still unfolding.
“I’d be experiencing some crazy high or crushing low, and I’d write a song about it and immediately record it. Many of these songs are real-time accounts of what I was going through in those moments.”
That approach gives Goodbye Summertime a personal foundation while allowing The Goods to expand beyond the guitar-pop style associated with the group’s earlier recordings.
The new album includes tracks such as “Lazy,” which draws on psychedelic influences, as well as the Mellotron-driven “Punchbowl.” “Wing” emphasizes a more vulnerable side of Good’s songwriting, while closing track “Sleepytime” develops around a gradual Wurlitzer crescendo.
The Goods Expand Their Sound on 14-Track Album
Good produced Goodbye Summertime at his Oakland studio, maintaining direct control over the recording process and the album’s overall sound.
The project also features contributions from Cherron Arens, Yea-Ming Chen and Ian McBrayer. Bart Thurber handled mixing and mastering.
The combination allows the record to broaden its musical range while retaining the melodic hooks that have been central to The Goods’ identity. The band’s style has been associated with power pop and indie guitar music, with reference points including The Lemon Twigs, Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet, Young Guv, The Apples In Stereo and The Raspberries.
Oakland Roots Remain Central to the Record
Oakland’s independent music community also plays an important role in the album’s character. Good’s years around the city’s clubs, neighbourhoods and record stores have helped shape a project centered on transition and the question of what people carry forward when circumstances change.
Although heartbreak runs through much of the record, Good said the creative process ultimately became a source of optimism rather than simply an account of loss.
“There’s some pain in there, but there’s a lot of joy as well, and creating the record was a joyous experience,” says Good. “Ultimately, it’s about persisting through difficult times and finding a way to carry on. That’s what making this record helped me to do.”
“Minor Key” Sets Stage for September Album Release
With “Minor Key,” The Goods offers another indication that Goodbye Summertime will move beyond straightforward power pop while retaining the melodic songwriting at the centre of the band’s work.
The single is available beginning August 19 through Dandy Boy Records. The full 14-track Goodbye Summertime album is scheduled to follow on September 16, 2026, bringing together songs written during a concentrated period of personal change, loss, new relationships and creative renewal.
