Amazon MGM Studios greenlights second season ahead of July global debut
Prime Video has released the official trailer and key art for Elle, the upcoming prequel series to the Legally Blonde franchise, as Amazon MGM Studios continues to expand its investment in established entertainment properties with global audience appeal.
The eight-episode first season, produced in association with Hello Sunshine, is scheduled to premiere July 1 on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. Ahead of the launch, the streaming platform has already approved a second season, signalling strong internal confidence in the franchise’s commercial potential and audience demand.
The series explores the formative teenage years of Elle Woods before the character’s rise to popularity in the original Legally Blonde films. Set in 1995, the show follows Elle navigating high school life, friendships, romance and family relationships while developing the personality traits audiences later associate with the iconic character.
Prequel expands one of Hollywood’s enduring comedy franchises
Season One of Elle centres on the character during her high school years, long before her transition to Harvard Law School introduced in the original film.
According to the official synopsis, viewers meet Elle Woods “as a fish in the tumultuous waters of high school where she encounters tricky friendships, forbidden romance, and questionable fashion choices.” The series positions her family relationships, particularly her bond with her mother, as a key emotional foundation throughout the story.
The synopsis adds that “with each challenge she faces, Elle grows closer to the Elle Woods we know and love today.”
The project represents another major franchise extension for Prime Video and parent company Amazon MGM Studios, which continue to compete aggressively in the increasingly crowded global streaming market by leveraging recognizable intellectual property with established fan bases.
Experienced production team leads development
The series was created by Laura Kittrell, whose previous credits include High School and Insecure. Kittrell also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Caroline Dries.
Actor and producer Reese Witherspoon, who originally portrayed Elle Woods in the Legally Blonde films, is attached as an executive producer through Hello Sunshine, the media company she co-founded. Lauren Neustadter, Amanda Brown and Marc Platt also serve as executive producers.
Jason Moore, known for directing Pitch Perfect, directed the first two episodes and joined the production team as an executive producer.
Bryan J. Raber and Asmita Paranjape are credited as producers, while Josie Craven and Jen Regan serve as supervising producers.
New cast introduces younger version of Elle Woods
The production features Lexi Minetree in the lead role as Elle Woods. Supporting cast members include June Diane Raphael as Elle’s mother Eva and Tom Everett Scott as her father Wyatt.
Additional cast members include Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker and Amy Pietz.
Recurring performers include Brad Harder, Chloe Wepper, Danielle Chand, David Burtka, James Van Der Beek, Jessica Belkin, Kayla Maisonet, Lisa Yamada, Logan Shroyer, Matt Oberg and Sharon Taylor.
The casting strategy combines emerging talent with established television and film performers, a common approach among streaming platforms seeking to balance franchise familiarity with fresh audience engagement.
Prime Video expands promotional strategy with live fan event
Alongside the digital release campaign, Prime Video is launching “Elle World,” a one-day promotional event in New York City tied to both the premiere of the series and the 25th anniversary of the Legally Blonde franchise.
The free event will feature experiential activations, merchandise and interactive fan experiences inspired by the world of Elle Woods. Reservations for the event are scheduled to open June 10 through the official event website.
The initiative reflects a broader industry trend in which streaming companies increasingly combine digital releases with live consumer experiences designed to strengthen fan engagement and social media visibility.
For Prime Video, Elle adds to a growing portfolio of franchise-driven content that includes titles such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Fallout, Reacher and The Boys. The platform continues to position itself as a central entertainment hub offering original productions, live sports and third-party streaming subscriptions within a single service ecosystem.
The release of Elle arrives as competition among streaming providers remains intense, with platforms increasingly relying on recognizable brands and established intellectual property to attract subscribers and retain global audiences.
