Montreal Garage Punk Group Builds Momentum With New Music and Expanding International Attention
Montreal garage punk band Taxi Girls is preparing to release its latest single, “Say It!”, on May 1, marking the next phase for the rising all-female rock outfit as it gears up for the launch of its debut full-length album Static later this summer.
The single, arriving through Stomp Records, comes as the band continues gaining traction within Canada’s independent music scene and abroad. Formed in 2022, Taxi Girls has quickly established itself within Montreal’s underground rock community through energetic live performances and a sound rooted in garage punk, power pop and classic rock ’n’ roll influences.
The band’s debut album Static is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026, with vinyl and digital pre-orders launching alongside the new single.
A Montreal Sound Rooted in Punk and Rock Tradition
Taxi Girls draws heavily from the spirit of Montreal’s nightlife and DIY music culture. The band describes its sound as shaped by late-night city experiences, combining gritty punk energy with melodic hooks and dual-vocal interplay.
Their music reflects influences ranging from Joan Jett and Nikki Corvette to contemporary punk and garage rock acts such as Amyl and the Sniffers and The Interrupters. The group’s style blends raw guitar-driven arrangements with sharp vocal exchanges between frontwomen Jamie Radu and Vera.
The release of “Say It!” offers listeners the first full preview of Static, an album the band says explores emotionally charged themes while maintaining an aggressive and energetic sound.
New Album Explores Personal and Emotional Themes
According to the band, the album examines experiences tied to identity, mental health and personal resilience.
“This record is very real and very raw, exploring themes of love, loss, struggles with mental health, postpartum depression, and being caught in endless loops of nostalgia. The light at the end of the tunnel is stepping into your power, owning it, feeling it and truly understanding what that means deep down. We felt this was the perfect way to showcase Taxi Girls and share how we really feel.”
The statement accompanies the release strategy for Static, which will also include a second single, “Secret Handshake,” arriving June 5, followed by “Midnight Mixtape” during the album’s release week.
Independent Canadian Acts Continue Expanding Global Reach
Taxi Girls’ emergence comes during a period of growing international visibility for Canadian independent rock artists, particularly those operating within punk and alternative music circles. Montreal, long recognized for its thriving independent music ecosystem, has produced a number of successful underground acts that later gained broader international audiences.
Since forming, Taxi Girls has performed alongside established acts including NOFX, Billy Talent, Lagwagon, The Hives, Pansy Division and Montreal punk band NOBRO. Those appearances have helped the group build visibility beyond Quebec and strengthen its profile within North America’s live music circuit.
BBC Radio Support Adds International Exposure
The band has also attracted attention overseas. Veteran musician and broadcaster Iggy Pop has featured Taxi Girls on his BBC 6 Music radio program, exposing the Montreal group to international listeners and adding momentum ahead of the album launch.
Industry observers note that radio support from influential figures can significantly boost emerging independent artists, particularly within niche genres such as garage punk and alternative rock.
“Say It!” Positioned as a Defining Release
The band describes “Say It!” as one of its most direct and uncompromising tracks to date. Built around driving guitars, aggressive rhythms and alternating vocal styles, the single focuses on themes of self-expression and emotional honesty.
The release also highlights Taxi Girls’ growing confidence as songwriters and performers. Their blend of punk intensity and accessible hooks positions the group within a new generation of Canadian rock acts seeking to balance underground credibility with wider audience appeal.
Anticipation Builds Ahead of Static Release
With the release of Static approaching, Taxi Girls appears positioned for a broader breakthrough within Canada’s independent music sector. The combination of expanding touring opportunities, international radio exposure and a steady rollout of new material has helped the band generate growing anticipation among fans of punk and alternative rock.
As Montreal continues to serve as a major creative hub for emerging artists, Taxi Girls’ latest release campaign underscores the city’s enduring influence on Canada’s independent music landscape.
The arrival of “Say It!” on May 1 marks a significant milestone for the band as it prepares to introduce its debut album to audiences across Canada and beyond.
