Federal Funding Pushes Recreation Infrastructure Into Spotlight
Prince Albert welcomed Secretary of State Buckley Belanger to the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre on May 2 as municipal leaders and community members discussed the future of sport and recreation infrastructure in Saskatchewan.
The visit came shortly after Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled the federal government’s 2026 Spring Economic Update, which included a $755 million commitment to sport over the next five years. The funding initiative is aimed at improving access to recreational opportunities across Canada while supporting the development and use of both existing and new community infrastructure.
During the tour, Secretary Belanger met with residents, local officials, and members of city council to discuss how the federal investment could benefit communities such as Prince Albert. The discussions focused on expanding participation in sport, strengthening social connections, and supporting active lifestyles through accessible recreation facilities.
Recreation Investments Seen as Economic and Community Drivers
Municipal leaders in Prince Albert view recreation infrastructure as more than just a public amenity, emphasizing its role in economic development, tourism, and long-term community growth.
Secretary Belanger used the visit to reinforce the federal government’s position that sport and recreation remain essential components of community development across the country.
Belanger Emphasizes Community Connections Through Sport
Secretary Belanger stated, “Canada is a sporting nation. Whether it’s the Northern Games, lacrosse, ice hockey, soccer, curling, basketball or parasports, communities love to come together to cheer on their friends and neighbours. I know what sport has meant to me throughout my life, and investments like these will help ensure that communities across Saskatchewan have access to the infrastructure they need to stay active and connected.”
The federal funding announcement is expected to support projects that encourage participation in organized sport while also helping municipalities maintain and expand recreation facilities. Officials say investments in these spaces can contribute to healthier populations, greater community engagement, and increased regional activity tied to sports tourism and events.
The Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre itself has become one of Prince Albert’s major recreational hubs, hosting community programming, fitness activities, aquatic services, and sporting events throughout the year. City officials highlighted the facility as an example of how government partnerships can support long-term infrastructure projects that benefit residents of all ages.
Prince Albert Seeks Future Partnerships for Major Projects
Mayor Bill Powalinsky said the city hopes the newly announced federal funding framework will create opportunities for future collaboration on additional community developments.
City Eyes Convention and Cultural Event Centre
Mayor Powalinsky stated, “We were honoured to welcome Secretary of State Belanger to Prince Albert and showcase the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre, which was made possible through government partnerships. The new federal allocation for sport strengthens our ability to pursue future partnerships, including funding for priority projects such as a proposed Convention and Cultural Event Centre that would further bring people together and support economic and cultural growth in our community.”
The proposed Convention and Cultural Event Centre has been identified by local leaders as a potential catalyst for economic activity, tourism growth, and expanded cultural programming within the region. Municipal officials believe projects tied to recreation and culture can help attract visitors, encourage investment, and improve overall quality of life for residents.
The City of Prince Albert said it remains focused on investing in facilities and infrastructure that support community needs while positioning the city for future growth. Local officials also noted that partnerships between municipal, provincial, and federal governments will continue to play a critical role in advancing large-scale recreation and cultural projects.
As governments across Canada increase their focus on sport and wellness infrastructure, communities like Prince Albert are positioning themselves to take advantage of funding opportunities that can support both social and economic development over the long term.
