Musi-Flo Artist of the Year expands her alt-pop and folk-rock sound with “Make Me Lose Control”
New release highlights growing momentum for Montréal-based independent artist
MONTRÉAL — Montréal singer-songwriter Silka Weil has released her latest single, “Make Me Lose Control,” marking the next step in the rollout for her forthcoming EP Midnight Blue, scheduled for release on July 3, 2026. The new track positions the emerging artist deeper within the alt-pop and folk-rock space while reinforcing her reputation for emotionally charged songwriting and striking live performances.
Weil, who was named Musi-Flo’s Artist of the Year in 2023, has steadily built recognition across Canada and internationally through radio appearances, interviews, and a growing catalogue of independent releases. Her latest single arrives as what many see as her most commercially accessible and sonically ambitious work to date.
Described as seductive and confrontational, “Make Me Lose Control” blends heavy rock instrumentation with atmospheric production and intimate lyrical moments. The release also continues Weil’s creative partnership with producer Jean-Sébastien Brault-Labbé, who handled recording, production, mixing, and mastering at Studio de la Ruelle.
A song designed for the stage
Weil says the track began with a desire to create something electrifying for live audiences
According to Weil, the song originated from a practical motivation: she wanted to write a track that would feel exciting to perform live. The creative process ultimately evolved into something more layered and emotionally intense.
“I sometimes enjoy being confrontational in my writing and performance,” she explains, “so for the most part it’s a little more direct than subtle.”
That directness shapes much of the song’s lyrical approach. The chorus leans into themes of desire, vulnerability, and emotional intensity, with Weil singing: “Tear through your heart and soul / You’re everything I want and more / Reduced down to our flesh and bone / You’re gonna make me lose control.”
The single balances aggressive rock-driven sections with softer and more reflective passages, particularly in the bridge. Weil said the contrast between those elements became one of the most rewarding aspects of the recording process.
The production also evolved organically during studio sessions. Weil completed the third verse spontaneously while recording and contributed backup vocals throughout the track. A late production decision to replace electronic drums with live drums following the bridge added additional energy and momentum to the final version.
The result is a song that reflects both technical refinement and the spontaneity of independent studio experimentation.
Growing profile in Canada’s independent music scene
Comparisons to PJ Harvey and Lana Del Rey continue to shape critical attention
Weil’s music has increasingly drawn comparisons to artists such as PJ Harvey and Lana Del Rey for its ability to combine emotional intimacy with bold and dramatic delivery. Elements of alternative rock influence from Wolf Alice are also present in the new release, particularly in its dynamic shifts and layered instrumentation.
Industry attention surrounding Weil has expanded over the past two years. In July 2025, she appeared on the cover of radiodowntown.ca and has since participated in radio interviews and broadcasts across Canada and abroad, including a live interview with Mexico-based media outlet Ella Suena.
Her growing audience has also responded positively to early live performances of “Make Me Lose Control,” suggesting the single could become a defining track in her catalogue ahead of the Midnight Blue EP release this summer.
The single is accompanied by a lyric video designed by Weil herself, underscoring her hands-on involvement in both the musical and visual aspects of her work. That independent approach has become increasingly central to her artistic identity as she continues to develop her profile within Canada’s alternative music landscape.
The emotional centre of the track emerges most clearly during its quieter bridge section, where Weil sings: “I would stay up all night / I would walk over fire / To stand in your light.”
With Midnight Blue scheduled for release in July, “Make Me Lose Control” offers an early indication of the direction Weil is taking creatively — one that combines polished production, raw emotional delivery, and a stronger push toward broader national recognition.
