Stop the sale of cars running on petrol, diesel and LPG from 2035, with European Parliament approval first – rules and institutions

The first green light for MEPs to stop the sale of cars and trucks with engines running on fossil fuels (petrol, diesel and LPG) from 2035. The European Parliament’s Environment Committee, by a narrow majority (46 in favour, 40 against and 2 abstentions), agreed its position. From the rules introduced by the European Union Commission to review the CO2 emissions performance standards for new vehicles.
The vote confirms Brussels’ proposal to sell zero-emissions cars and trucks from 2035.
The text will now be presented to the European Parliament’s plenary session in June. This is the European Parliament’s first vote on a “fit for 55” regulation, which aligns various legislative texts with the EU’s new climate target, which stipulates a 55% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030. Among other amendments approved , which would have to pass public testing and then negotiated with the EU Council, a proposal for targeted financing to ensure a fair transition in the automotive sector, and a common EU methodology for assessing the full life-cycle of CO2 emissions from cars and vans placed in the community market.
