The film is based on Weir’s novel Project Hail Mary, which became a New York Times bestseller and earned praise for its blend of scientific problem-solving, humour and high-stakes storytelling.

Story Follows a Mission to Save Earth
At the centre of the story is Ryland Grace, portrayed by Gosling, a science teacher who awakens aboard a spacecraft far from Earth with no memory of his identity or purpose.
As fragments of his memory return, Grace begins to understand the extraordinary circumstances that brought him into space. He discovers that humanity is facing an extinction-level threat linked to a mysterious substance affecting the sun.
According to the studio synopsis:
“Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.”
The narrative combines scientific discovery, survival and interstellar exploration while also emphasizing the personal relationships that emerge during extraordinary circumstances.
Prime Video Expands Its Science-Fiction Portfolio
The release of Project Hail Mary continues Prime Video’s investment in high-profile science-fiction programming and feature films. The project arrives with significant expectations due to the popularity of Weir’s source material and the involvement of Gosling, whose recent performances have drawn strong audience and critical attention.
Industry observers will also be watching closely to see how audiences respond to another cinematic adaptation of Weir’s work. His previous novel adaptation, The Martian, became both a commercial and critical success, helping establish a strong track record for translating his science-based storytelling to film.
With its combination of an established literary property, an experienced filmmaking team and a globally recognized lead actor, Project Hail Mary is positioned as one of Prime Video’s marquee releases for the summer streaming season.
